Spain international Xavi has slammed former Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard, saying that the Dutchman had an excessive physical approach to the game.
Rijkaard took charge of the Catalan giants between 2003 and 2008, leading the club to two La Liga titles and one Champions League crown, among other trophies.
Xavi believes that the 49-year-old gave more importance to physique than to talent, which made him grow unhappy in the squad.
"Rijkaard did not believe in me," he told L'Equipe. "He wanted our game to be based on a superior physical level.
"He believed that it was the only way to be at the same level as the top clubs in Europe.
"Four or five years ago, I was [deemed] terrible and useless. I was Barca's cancer! A player 1,70m tall was simply impossible."

5 years ago, Deco kept vagi on the bench which is probably why he didnt play, also Deco isnt tall lol

Actually it was Van Bommel that kept him from playing and injury
Not sure how Dinho and Deco have any relevance as they play in different positions.....

Tbf he said 4 years ago, i have a feeling he is just talking about the final years of Rijkaard where Barca played alot with 2 holding players and Deco.
Xavi played alot in the Busquets role aswell, he clearly wasnt the fulcrum of the team like he is now.

yh, i think Rijkaard wanted to base his team as a unit rather than relying on 3 players to come up with magic which is why Xavi was overlooked for whatever player

Xavi played all the time, nobody benched him.
The only time he didnt play, was when he got a ligament injury and missed most of the season. He came back but obviously wasnt fit enough to start.
Why do people insist on making things up lol
Anyway, on his comments. I dont really get them..maybe he is talking about public perception when he says "cancer" because there were blind people out there who didnt see his class.
His comments about Rijkaard, I guess meaning he never got to play in the way he does now and since 09. With a measure of freedom and more importance to how the team runs.

Also Dani, iam getting old as my memory is rather strained but i seem to remember him being in and out of the side and played in various different roles.

I don't think Cesc is like Xavi. Xavi is one of best CM's in history of football, and Cesc is not even close there.

In every single season post 02 (before Rijkaard obviously) he has started at least 30 La Liga games, come off the bench no more than 4.
Only season he didnt start 30 games, was the injury season where he only played 14 with 2 sub apperances, I assume both after the injury.

I was talking about what types of midfielder they are, Cesc no matter how good he gets will never be able to replicate what Xavi does........
He offers different things and is nothing like Xavi.
