Clint Dempsey's Future
So Deuce has stated that he wants to play in the CL, and he's been talking about it a lot recently. I'm almost certain that he will leave Fulham in the summer.
Where do you guys think he will end up next season? We were heavily linked with him, but we got Arteta instead so we stopped pursuing him. I would be very happy to have him and I think he is a player we could definitely use. He's a very complete player, not a 1-position pony, and we already know how good he is in the EPL + international duties for the USNT.
thoughts?

Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
Klinsmann echoes my thoughts as well..
http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/7973363/clint-dempsey-leave-fulham-jurgen-klinsmann-says
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann is encouraging Clint Dempsey to leave Fulham and sign with a bigger club.
The 29-year-old Texan scored 17 Premier League goals and 23 overall this season, the best season by an American attacking player in England.
Dempsey's contract with Fulham has one year remaining.
"His goal is the right goal," Klinsmann said during a conference call Friday, a day before the Americans play an exhibition against Scotland. "If he has the opportunity to go a Champions League team, that's the creme de la creme in the world of club soccer, then you've got to do that. With all respect obviously to Fulham, as he often mentions, but you want to play in the biggest club competition in the world and that's the European Champions League.
"So hopefully something will happen over the next couple weeks. But if it doesn't happen, then he just has to keep kind of pounding away and knocking at the door."
Dempsey was tied for fourth in the EPL in scoring, trailing only Arsenal's Robin van Persie (31), Manchester United's Wayne Rooney (27) and Manchester City's Sergio Aguero (23).
"The sky is the limit if you want to work for it, if you want to do it every day and if you want to be hungrier and nastier and stronger than your competitors. He embraced that approach, and that's why when he's now coming into the national team environment, he's one of the leaders," Klinsmann said. "Players look up to him, especially the young players. Now they look at Clint, they want to play where he's playing or they want to hear from him what it takes to become one of the best players in the English Premier League."
Dempsey will miss the United States' match against Scotland on Saturday night in Jacksonville, Fla. Dempsey is still recovering from a groin strain that caused him to miss the ninth-place Cottagers' season finale at Tottenham on May 19 and he might not be ready for Wednesday night's exhibition against Brazil in Landover, Md.
Dempsey and Landon Donovan have not played together since Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach last July.

I only see him going to Arsenal or Liverpool, otherwise he should stay put.

i'd love him at valencia but the dumbasses in charge of our transfer policy wouldn't recognise marketing potential if it slapped them in the face

Would'nt make much sense IMO..... considering what the system will be like
Dempsey could'nt really play in midfield if they sign Sigurdsson like reported it would be too open, he cant really play wide because i think Suarez will play as a inside forward on one side and i reckon Rodgers will want a natural winger also i doubt Dempsey would be Liverpool's CF.
He can play all those roles for sure but considering how Rodgers want to play i dont feel he fits that well.
Ofcourse if they dont sign Sigurdsson then it makes sense because that's the only position he fits like a glove but i think they will sign Sigurdsson.

Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
Exactly the kind of guy we could use at Arsenal. Mentally tough, a fierce competitor, effective in several positions, and American
All that means is that we wont get him though tbh.

Really can't see any CL club buying him right now. At least in the top leagues. The most likely is Arsenal and that's not going to happen of course.

He said he's going to let his contract expire if he doesn't get a move this summer.
Which means he'll be a free agent.
Which means Milan will try to sign him.

Liverpool the only "big" club I can see wanting him but honestly if I was Dempsey I wouldn't even bother because they won't be going to the Champions League next season or the season after in all likelyhood.

Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
It's more a question of whether Liverpool would want him. In the current squad, with the current manager, it's unlikely as he doesn't really fit into the side, unless he's willing to accept a squad role, which seems unlikely.MarkForrest17 wrote:Liverpool the only "big" club I can see wanting him but honestly if I was Dempsey I wouldn't even bother because they won't be going to the Champions League next season or the season after in all likelyhood.

I personally would love if Arsenal showed true interest, and actually try to sign him.

Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
He's a much better fit in a Brendan Rodgers side than Andy Carroll.
Doubt Liverpool would be interested though neither would Dempsey since the odds of this current Liverpool side making the CL in the next 2/3 years are pretty slim.

Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
True. I still think that Liverpool needs a set piece threat to score off of corners and such. He mostly scores off of set pieces. He has also greatly improved his free kicks also, While he may not fit completely into liverpools new one touch style of play with their new manager, I think they should probably invest in him. But if I was him, I'd want to play in CL now, and because they aren't in it next season and most likely, while I won't say its impossible, seeing as how Newcastle surprised everyone and came close to a CL spot, won't qualify next season either.RedOranje wrote:It's more a question of whether Liverpool would want him. Re: Clint Dempsey's Future
He's really not, especially as he rarely plays at his best without some freedom to roam a bit (something he would be limited from doing as the CF in Rodgers' system.Gil wrote:He's a much better fit in a Brendan Rodgers side than Andy Carroll.

We scored a fair few from set pieces last season, with Skrtel, Agger, and Carroll all providing aerial threats. Gerrard, Suarez, and several others in the squad also provide set pieces that are of a similar or better quality than Dempsey's. Also, the system isn't "one-touch". Nor would Dempsey been seen as an investment, but rather an expenditure due to his age and resale value.MarkForrest17 wrote:
