Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2012-2013 (stats)
I think Bayern with Neuer might have a good run again, too. Dortmund and M'gladbach will likely get their stats ruined in the CL, and Schalke only rise high in the tables as they simply score sufficiently more than they get in, same as Hannover in the EL.

Bundesiga has only 34 games so it should be compared with other 18 team leagues statistically
Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2012-2013 (stats)
If you calculate a quotient, the numbers are per match based. I just write down the absolute numbers to have a better overview from which to calculate the quotient later. For better reference you might want to check the 2011/12 data.Adit wrote:Bundesiga has only 34 games so it should be compared with other 18 team leagues statistically

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2012-2013 (stats)
I updated the first post with the data of the midweek league matches.
Here's the goalkeeper of Europe's current top defense: Fabian Giefer of Bundesliga newcomer Fortuna Düsseldorf, who managed to keep 5 consecutive clean sheets together with his defense line consisting of Tobias Levels, Stelios Malezas, Jens Langeneke, and Johannes van den Bergh.
Fabian Giefer turned down an offer from Bayern München before the begin of the season as he preferred to have the chance to get a starting spot in a smaller club to being the Nr.2 of one of the Bundesliga top addresses.

Imagine what we could have achieved with Bould at the helm all those years ago

Robbie Kruse is actually a striker - but then, a good defense starts with the attack line

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2012-2013 (stats)
So. I updated the top defenses as of now. There are two more matches tomorrow where it will be decided whether Mallorca and West Ham will stay in the list, but for now the overview has some new names among rather few of the usual suspects.
From the BL, both Borussia Dortmund (8 goals against in 6 matches) and Borussia M'Gladbach (12 GA) catapulted themselves far out of the competition so far. But also ManUtd (9 GA) and ManCity (8 GA) don't look as convincing as last season.

Adler was indeed amazing in that match. Looks like he wants to give Manuel Neuer a run for his money in the NT after all.

Re: Return of the Top Defenses of the Top 5 Leagues 2012-2013 (stats)
Well, René Adler's NT career was severaly marred by his injuries and less by other issues. He should have been the Nr.1 of the U21 NT in 2006, but had to withdraw due to an injury (hair fracture of a rib) in favour of Michael Rensing.Yohan Modric wrote:Adler.. In 2010 he was supposed to be Germany's Nr.1 after Robert Enke's death, but again he got injured (another rib injury) short before the tournament (in May 2010), and Manuel Neuer took over.
In 2011, he again had to undergo surgery (this time the patellar tendon), and there he lost his Nr.1 spot in Leverkusen to Bernd Leno.
I really hope that he will finally stay injury-free for a longer time!

Oh, by the way, Manuel Neuer just stated that he thinks that René Adler can very well return to the NT and somehow my impression wasn't that he would begrudge him that.Yohan Modric wrote:Adler.. Weren't him and Neuer not on par not so long ago?

Well Adler was #1 and just for the record I think Reneé Adler is one of the sexiest names in football

Update with the matches of today. Stoke only let in 5 goals so far!
BTW, I decided to put the data into a proper spreadsheet after all. Here's the current table (red: Champions, black CL teams, purple EL teams and green clubs that are not active in Europe but still interesting)
