Avoidable: yes. Taking advantage of incidental contact: yes. Complete and unadulterated dive: not really. In short, I've seen better work from Bale. He should've gotten at least a yard away from the Scotland player before going down.

The players who dive the most are usually the one who get the toughest tackles. Obviously it doesn't excuse it but I really can't blame players for wanting to avoid contact any way they can.

Play acting is much more deplorable action imo, trying to con the referee by exaggerating contact is different to falling down then getting back up again.

In the end it's in the hands of the ref to make sure to make the right calls and that means acknowledging that sometimes a player can be fouled even if he doesn't fall over. Never giving a fk unless a player falls is what encourages diving imo.
