Marotta: 'Buffon criticism untrue'
Juventus director general Beppe Marotta told off critics who thought Gigi Buffon was faking his injury on international duty.
There were rumours the goalkeeper had pulled out of the World Cup qualifier with Denmark in order to preserve himself for today’s Juve-Napoli showdown, but in truth the thigh strain has ruled him out of this game too.
“The truth shows that the criticism on Buffon was incorrect. Wearing the Azzurri jersey must be a source of pride for everyone and so it happens to risk playing even when not at full fitness,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.
“Andrea Pirlo is in good shape and knows how to control his energy levels. He is one of those who moves the most on the pitch, even if he uses his brain more than his legs, so perhaps that helps him become less fatigued.”
The Bianconeri director joined forces with Udinese Coach Francesco Guidolin in urging a change to the Serie A system.
“We are all in favour of our players going on international duty, but the format ought to be revamped and return Serie A to 18 teams.”
Marotta was at the Juventus Stadium ahead of today’s top of the table battle with Napoli.
“There are two great Coaches who are doing good work for Italian football. Angelo Alessio is now available for the touchline after his ban was cut on appeal, so Massimo Carrera returns to an assistant role.”
