Its no surprise a 3 man back line is back in resurgence for Serie A since it essentially is the original Italian formation. People who wonder why Italians historically don't use wingers to provide width do not account for the fact that the Wingback position is prevalently taught as compared to being a fullback within the Italian primaveras which is why you will see more Italian fullbacks in general, comfortable as WB then a FB. The 3 man allows Italian teams to naturally use a neo-Libero in which the central CB can venture out and play-make within the crux of the midfield while the two CBs MUST keep their discipline.

Milan has used the 3 man formation this season as we used a 3-4-3 at least 4 times yet it was scrapped due to Berlusconi not being fond of the more careful and calculative build-ups to the play. It worked quite well in some sorts for us actually and complimented a lot of our CBs yet ultimately the 4-3-3 was chosen over the 3 man.

Lazio playing now with a 3 man line Proud

Is it fair to say that Conte's Juve's success with the system started this reincarnation or are there deeper reasons?

Also Arq that might be the case, but right now the best WBs (or those played in that position) in Serie A are foreigners.

Liverpool used it 3/4 times earlier in the season in PL. Everton match is the one that stands out to me the most.
