Joey Barton disses Thiago Silva

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton has been threatened with action by Paris Saint-Germain over offensive statements that he made about defender Thiago Silva on Twitter on Wednesday.

The Parisian team, who currently top Ligue 1, have backed their defender, calling the "attacks" unacceptable, and say that they will take action if it is deemed necessary.

"These last hours on social networks, unacceptable statements were made by Joey Barton, player of Olympique Marseille against Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva," a statement on the club's official website read.

"These attacks are serious and go beyond mere verbal joust. The officers of the club, the players and the technical staff supporting Thiago Silva cannot accept such a statement.

"They reiterate their firm commitment to the values of respect that should be the rule of our sport. Thiago Silva and Paris Saint-Germain reserve the right to take any action they deem necessary."

The 30-year-old, currently on loan from QPR, is no stranger to controversy and made comments on Twitter after the Brazil international's press conference in which Silva said that "no-one is talking" about Barton and that he did not remember the midfielder's name.

"2 questions for Thiago Silva. Firstly, Why are YOU talking about ME, in your press conference before PSG v Barca? Very strange," Barton wrote.

"Secondly, Are you Pre-Op or Post-Op? #transsexual #thiagosaladyboy... Baffles me, which way he's going. Is he a man changing to a woman or a woman changing to a man? Can't work it out."

English midfielder Joey Barton has escaped punishment over his recent outburst against Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva, as the National Council of Ethics (CNE) ruled that it would not sanction the offence.

Barton, who described the Brazil captain as an “overweight ladyboy” was given a let-off by the National Council of Ethics (CNE) after it was decided that interpretation of the statements made in English could be an issue.

The Council has not been able to judge the case," CNE president Laurent Davenas said. "There could be problems of interpretation of statements made in English.

"On the other hand, we have not received the conclusions of lawyers just until Friday night at the FFF. The members of the commission have not had access to this dossier a sufficient time. And then, this case raises legal issues. Twitter is a public communication space."

Barton, whose actions were described as “unacceptable” by Thiago Silva's employers PSG could, though, still face separate punishment from the French Football Federation, should they choose to open proceedings.

The 30-year-old midfielder has previously been responsible for a verbal assault on Brazil star Neymar, once more via Twitter, in which he described the youngster as playing in the “Amazon jungle league”.
