Running up the score.
I moved to the USA when I was 17 and was used to youth teams just mercilessly slaughtering one another without remorse in Germany. I played soccer in High School for a season and it was 6-0 and at half time the coach told us to respect the other team and not score anymore. It didn't make any sense to me. So I didn't think much of it and scored another one. Coach took me off and was furious. I haven't even seen a German coach as furious after a loss. It all didn't make any sense to me. It still doesn't. I can see what is meant by it I just don't feel any connection to the concept. It's just a round object going into a rectangular object. If anybody's feelings are hurt because of it that's their problem. Maybe don't play it then. Not my problem. There are real things to get feelings hurt about.
Anyways, what do you think?

the biggest disrespect you can give to your opponent is go easy on them.

I don't like 'taking it easy' once you're comfortably ahead, I prefer to keep playing the same way until the game is over.. It would be best to stop celebrating after a while, but not looking to score is ridiculous IMO
I understand the idea behind it, but if I were a coach or a player I would prefer to score as many times as I can

Re: Running up the score.
I have different feelings about this rule depending on the sport and the level that it is being played. However, even if you do not feel a connection to the rule, it would probably be best to follow coaches orders. You may not understand the reasoning behind it, but once you decide to disregard your coach, he may feel as if the truth between you two is lost.
I've heard that Serie A teams tend to take the foot off the pedal once a game becomes 4-0, although I am not sure where the other leagues stand on this.
When it comes to football I do find it strange/awkward to stop attempting to score - what are you supposed to do, pass the ball around the other team? That seems more disrespectful to me. Perhaps a coach can opt to take off the stronger players, but I feel you can continue to play your game without rubbing it in. I can't say that I would enjoy demolishing a team 10-0 (especially at a high school level), so I don't really see anything wrong with your coaches wishes.

The other team's coach might've told your team coach to tell the players to stop scoring furthermore as it might damage the opposition players' morale.

The coach is overreacting if he becomes furious for you scoring one more time.
It's also boring not to try your best when doing sports.

yup. given the recent example, i prefer bayern to trash us 9-2 and expose everything that is wrong about HSV's game, rather than them stopping at 5-0 or so.

Re: Running up the score.
i guess it's an american concept. we view it as disrespect, that's why you see teams put in all the bench players when the game isn't even really in contention anymore.
it really shouldn't apply to soccer(football) though. especially if goal differential is a factor. plus you cant just empty the bench like other sports, there's usually limited subs in soccer

Moreover, being 4:0 up might not be sufficient to win - one never knows ^^VivaStPauli wrote:This.Donuts wrote:the biggest disrespect you can give to your opponent is go easy on them.
