Flamini back and lucky the ref didn't send him off. Brings lots of tenacity but that tackle was a rash moment.
Ramey was MOTM, I mean yeah he makes a few blunders on the ball but wow, he made tottenhams "big strong" midfielders look like little mice today
first 40 minutes I had particular attention on how ramsey and wilshere work together, for the third start in a row it was fine, wilsheres definitely worked on his defensive positioning and is regaining that sharpness on the ball. I said before the season started they have a lot potential as a double pivot and each game since villa has made me more sure. Im glad jacks not injured, that would have been very unfortunate timing.
Good performance defensively bar a couple of disasterous clearences (I look at you giroud) that nearly added to our "individual error" goal tally, and a bad start by gibbs and jenkinson, but they got better as the game went on.
I am more impressed by giroud this season, not his goals, but his hold up play has actually improved. I still think he is a bit meh though, and we need someone at least to provide him competition (sanogo is clearly miles from being ready atm). If Giroud gets an injury forget false 9, we will be playing the invisible 9

-Today was a team performance but defense and Ramsey had a top game.
-We were not clinical considering chances we had.
- Giroud is improving but we still badly need a striker.
- Our squad is so thin atm, cannot survive beyond Sept.
- Wenger is doing a great job with new midfield. They operating everywhere. Opposition are struggling to keep up with players.
- If we have a top class player instead of Rosicky, life at Arsenal would be much better.
- Walcott has grown up
- Jenkinson's distribution is meh, he still has alot of work to do to become a genuine RB.
- Koscielny aka Bosscielny
- Oh some weird kicks by Szczesny. Its his last chance to improve. He has tools to save that nr 1 spot, just mentally weak sometimes.
- Totts will not improve anytime soon. Bale saved their asses countless times. New QPR is in town.

despite people thinking wenger not signing players will cause arsenals downfall, i think arsenal will do ok this year. they will probably finish 4rth.

Very good collective performance by all the lads. Not really going to go into individual performance too much. However, after seein the way Flamini performed for his second debut, I have to hand it to him - never looked like he ever left us.
Early doors yet, but if he performs like that right through to May, then I'll have to give Wenger credit for that coup.

I managed to rewatch the whole game last night, so I've got some extra stuff. Things I'll be looking at: Arsenal's fluid midfield, midfield cover and Koscielny's man marking.
Now, here are some interesting things I spotted about our midfield set-up:
Finally, let's look at some defending.
- Arsenal's Goal:
The move started right at the back. Spurs had released Chadli after a neat exchange with Rose, but his run at our defence was stopped by a casually excellent tackle from Mertesacker.
Note how narrow Arsenal's backline was, and how Wilshere had got back to shield it. This was a good shape to have.
As Arsenal played out the back, Santi Cazorla made a key move with the ball. By dropping deep, he opened up a space for Ramsey to run into. Aware of this, Ramsey moved into the space behind Spurs' midfield. Cazorla played an excellent pass between Spurs' central midfielders to find him.
Ramsey could have, at that point, play the ball in behind Walker and into the path of Gibbs. Ramsey, though, decided to spread the play to Rosicky.
There were then two key movements. Firstly, Giroud peeled off the back of Dawson. This made it so the ball over the top was possible and subsequently Dawson had to go with that run. Secondly, Walcott made a run behind Danny Rose, who had stepped forward in an attempt to close down Rosicky.
Spurs' backline there was a mess, where three players did three different things. Dawson had dropped back to go with Giroud, Rose had stepped out to press Rosicky and Vertonghen just stood still between them and allowed Walcott to run off him. It was possible that Vertonghen opted to hold his position, as he assumed that his centre back partner and right back were doing the same. Either way, his inactivity left Walcott with plenty of room.
Usually, if you've been playing a highline and end up in a situation where the player on the ball is under no pressure, you've got to drop back and prevent runners in behind. The way Spurs defended this was very similar to the way Arsenal defended against Spurs in the last North London derby.
The move was rounded off by a very clever finish from Giroud. He made the right run towards the near post, leaving Dawson, who was too slow to react, behind and was found by Walcott who, given that amount of time and space, will pick out a player 9 times out of 10.
Now, here are some interesting things I spotted about our midfield set-up:
- Arsenal's Midfield:
Arsenal's midfield shape was supposed to be Wilshere and Ramsey in a pivot, headed by Rosicky with Cazorla and Walcott playing on the flanks. However, as we've seen in the last few months, Cazorla has a free role and is allowed to drift wherever he wants.
In this game, Cazorla came into central areas in order to give Arsenal a numerical advantage against Spurs' three midfielders. Spurs struggled to get to grips with this in the first half. In the above screenshot, we can see that Cazorla had moved all the way to the other side on the pitch to pick up the ball. He would then proceed to ping an excellent pass over the top of Spurs' highline, which Giroud failed to take full advantage of.
Again, Cazorla has found himself in a right-cente midfield position. This created a sort of box where the four playmakers in the team were in close proximity with each other.
Another interesting thing to note about our midfield is how it settles into a defensive shape. As it is fluid in possession, players will be out of position when it comes to defending; Cazorla, who, as the left side players, would be tasked with protecting his full back but if he's over on the right hand side or in a more central position, he can't do that.
So to prevent zones like that becoming vulnerable, Arsenal's midfielders defend the zone they happen to be in the time. This is a basic concept of defending, but not something that we've always practised. The important thing here is there is a shape, even if the individual qualities of the player aren't suited to the zone he finds himself in.
So you can see here how Rosicky has moved over to the left hand side to protect Gibbs, while Cazorla is a central position just off the striker. This meant that Arsenal retained their usual defensive shape of 4-4-1-1.
Here we see the box again. This time, Wilshere is sitting and Cazorla has taken up the advanced position Rosicky would usually play in.
And here's defensive example. This time, Rosicky has dropped in to centre midfield to cover for Ramsey, who's gone out to the left hand side.
30 or seconds later, Rosicky is still in central midfield, while Ramsey has stayed out on the left hand side. As Spurs have retained the ball, Ramsey and Rosicky can't swap back into their "default" positions.
This is another example of Cazorla coming in off the flank and effecting central areas. We've had a lot of debate about whether he should play on the left or in the middle, but ultimately, for me, it makes little difference. Him playing on the left doesn't prevent him from taking up a dangerous position and threading a great through pass between the centre backs.
In this particular instance, the pass was possible due to Spurs' backline again lacking cohesiveness. Rose had gone with Walcott's run instead of steeping out with the rest of his backline. In doing so, he played Walcott onside and if not for Lloris' excellent reactions, Walcott probably would have scored.
Incidentally, in the second half, Cazorla came off his flank a lot less, and with Flamini in the side, that box appeared considerably less. These two things may have contributed to Arsenal's struggle to keep the ball in the second half.
Finally, let's look at some defending.
- Arsenal's Defending:
Early on in the second half, Arsenal were already falling into a great shape. Flamini had taken up a deeper, anchor-man position while the rest of Arsenal's midfield lined-up in front of him. This was not easy for Spurs to play through. In fact, a lot of teams would struggle to play through that.
Here we can see the benefit of having a player like Flamini in the side. Koscielny had stepped out to pursuit the Spurs player. In doing so, he left a space in behind. Who moved to cover that space? Flamini. Had Spurs got a run out backline, we still would have four players back to deal with it.
The same thing happened here. Koscielny, who was shadowing Soldado all game, pushed forward to win the ball back from him. As he did so, Flamini began to move back to cover the vacant space.
It wasn't just Flamini who did, either. Here, Flamini has pressed the Spurs player high up. If there were no Arsenal players covering the vacated space, Spurs' midfielders would have had a lot of space. As it happened, Giroud covered that space and held the player up, which allowed Flamini time to get back and get a tackle in.
Here, Solado had gone wide to find space. Koscielny tracked him all the way and got a tackle in. He could so safe in the knowledge that Flamini, again, is covering the space he had left behind.
And again, Koscielny had followed Soldado to the halfway line and yet again, Flamini began to move to cover the space.
I'm going to end with my favourite image of the game: four Arsenal players making a block on one shot. Beautiful.
