UEFA Best Women Player of Europe 2013: Nadine Angerer!

The inaugural UEFA Women Player of the Year Award 2013 took place today.

Nominees were Nadine Angerer, GK of the German NT, formerly 1. FFC Frankfurt and now Brisbane Roar, Lena Goeßling, midfielder of the German NT and VfL Wolfsburg, and Lotta Schelin, striker of the Swedish NT and Olympique Lyon.

By the way, the above saves were penalties from open play,  not from a penalty shoot-out. That is, she actually saved two pens in the Euro 2013 final

(And in 2007, she saved a pen by Brazil's Marta in the World Cup final, too, to keep her cleen sheet for the whole tournament and give Germany the cup then.)

The UCL final 2012/13 was between VfL Wolfsburg and Olympique Lyon, and Wolfsburg's GK was Alisa Vetterlein (who now plays for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim). Yeah, Germany has quite a lot of top GKs in women football, too

Absolutely. She was voted player of the tournament in the 2007 World Cup for not allowing a single goal against and now in the Euro 2013, too, where she only had to fetch the ball out of the net one time.

Honestly I don't see why women GKs should not be allowed to compete in professional football.

No 1st or 2nd  divison club would have a woman in goalie, the level is too high... And imagine a woman spending hours every day in the locker-room with some horny monkeys in 5th division football, wouldn't that be a little strange?? ... Men football is dirty!

Well, interestingly the GK of the German woman ice-hockey team does play for a men's ice-hockey team in the 3rd liga. AFAIK in football the rules don't allow female players to play in the men's team after a certain age (15 or so).
