Yup, the contract was up in summer, and Diego asked for a transfer to Atleti (which was why he didn't play the last match). As he got an alleged 8 mio Euros / year, Wolfsburg saved quite some wages and got rid of a player who seemed to have disrupted the dressing room. I guess in the end everybody was glad the drama was finally over.
