WC Stadium Collapse in Sao Paolo
Crane fell onto the stadium...
Edit: According to Russia Today, this was the stadium scheduled to host the opening?

Ffs. I was thinking about going to the WC... but given that building standards seem 3rd worldish in Brazil, i don't want to set foot in a new stadium. If one stadium has substandard structural engineering and geo testing, chances are that more do as well.
Very sad and troubling.

As an aside, does anyone know when FIFAs completion deadline is? I thought that was pretty soon and even pre-collapse it looks like they had a lot left to do

Re: WC Stadium Collapse in Sao Paolo
They announced a couple of weeks ago that it (the stadium that just collapsed) was 94% completed. From what I read, they're going to analyze whether or not they'll be able to finish construction in time.

There are reports that there are either two or three workers already dead and an additional worker is trapped in the rubble.
Also a newspaper is reporting that one of its reporters was assaulted by the ex Corinthians president (the guy responsible for the stadium construction) and the some of the constructor's employees. The reporter was forced to delete pictures he had taken on his cell phone of the accident.
These WC preparations are getting increasingly aggravating and sad. There is too much corruption, theft, waste, and incompetence.
I haven't the slightest clue as to how any sane person thought we were ready to host an WC.

It'll be the surprise of the century if Brasil is ready to host the Cup when it starts.

So in theory what happens if the host nation is not able to meet the standards of FIFA? Is there an option B for who gets to host it?

You are only now realizing that Brazil is a poor country?sportsczy wrote:Ffs. Edit: just to clarify I am not meaning this as an insult to Brazilians, rather that as a country with a GDP per capita of $12,000 and some of the biggest inequality in the world people should not have developed country expectations for them.

So does anyone have a clue as to what will happen if Brazil don't meet FIFA's requirements for safety, stadiums etc etc?

Re: WC Stadium Collapse in Sao Paolo
Like I replied before, I think that ship has sailed. FIFA were there earlier this year, if I remember right, and there was some talk back then whether the tournament should be moved and they said no. I think's it's too late to move it and it would cause huge outrage in Brasil because they've already spend so much money on the project. It's happening in Brasil but we'll see with what problems.McAgger wrote:So does anyone have a clue as to what will happen if Brazil don't meet FIFA's requirements for safety, stadiums etc etc?

Don't they have backup countries? So if one country can't host it, then the backup hosts it instead.

Re: WC Stadium Collapse in Sao Paolo
I've been to Brazil several times. It's far from poor. There's just massive inequity. There are very opulent places and extreme poverty unfortunately.BarrileteCosmico wrote:You are only now realizing that Brazil is a poor country?sportsczy wrote:Ffs. If you go by GDP per capita, China is 87th lol at 8k per. So that's a very, very relative measure. Total country wealth is more telling and Brazil is 6th in the world.
In fact, i'd call Brazil a very wealthy country... but the wealth is hoarded by the elite.

Well said. THat pretty much applies for all of the BRIC countries.sportsczy wrote:I've been to Brazil several times. It's far from poor. Re: WC Stadium Collapse in Sao Paolo
You are kidding yourself if you can say, with a straight face, that Brazil is "Far from Poor". You go to the emergency room in ANY big city, and prepare to be there sitting on a floor for hours if not days. These arent just poor people either. Middle class also get shafted by this. There arent enough Hospitals, but we can spend money on building this crap. Looks like these stadiums are built crappily like everything else. A few people may be rich, but the country is poor. Those girls at the beaches letting you screw them for 20 bucks and dinner? They arent doing it for your personality.
How awesome it is to have to live behind fences and barbed wire, because police dont do their job, only to be forced to wait in a hospital because overpaid public servants also cant be bothered to do their jobs.
Its all good though because you cant host world cups with hospitals!
I'd rather watch that thing Kaka calls a wifebrainwash evangelize to children on TV than ever see that tranny chasing fatty again.

I think you misunderstood my point... the country has massive wealth. But it's all hoarded by the elite. Similar to China, Russia and India. I've been to all these countries and it's all the same: Incredible oppulence in certain areas and also abject poverty.
So, yes, the country of Brazil is massively wealthy. But it's not distributed at all.
There are also very, very nice areas of Brazil. Just like the other BRIC countries...

I mean, there isnt a single country on Earth where there isnt a small group of Elite living like kings compared to the rest.
There are also nice areas in these countries where the rich are able to segregate themselves from the rest of society.
