The Good, the Bad, and the Nicolas Cage Empty The Good, the Bad, and the Nicolas Cage

Post by McAgger Tue Dec 31, 2013 8:19 pm

Tried finding an existing thread for this but couldn't find one so here it is. I want to talk about the undisputed greatest actors of all time, the art of acting itself, the choice of characters and films by the actors, and everything that has to do with separating the greats from the rest.

First of all who is your favorite actor/actress (I know there are plenty but try choosing just 1)?
And then who do you think is the greatest actor of all time (or at least who do you think a mention up there, and doesn't necessarily have to be your favorite actor)?
What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?
Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?
Who are some underrated actors?

Let's get some debates going.

I'll start...

There are plenty of actors that I like a lot but my most favorite is Denzel Washington. He's absolutely out of this world.

As for the greatest of all time, the list is undeniable long with the likes of De Niro, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Tom Hanks, Alain Delon, Clint Eastwood, Sean Penn etc, etc, etc. And I'd even put Leo in this group (he's so unappreciated). But the greatest of them all for me is Daniel Day Lewis. Absolutely out of this world in every movie I've seen with him.

I hold Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ryan Gosling, and Casey Affleck in a distinct group that I think will be right up there when they get older.

Discuss....

The Good, the Bad, and the Nicolas Cage Empty Re: The Good, the Bad, and the Nicolas Cage

Post by El Gunner Thu Jan 02, 2014 8:46 pm

Yesterday I wrote a good piece just for this thread about Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara being, imo, the two most talented young actresses with loads of potential. Especially the former, I praised her in it a lot. I finished the piece and then read it over again to check for any errors and then my phone fecking freezed and restarted without me saving the piece.
I just couldn't be arsed to write it again. So yeah, let's just start here.

What are you guys' thoughts on these two actresses? I think J-Law is very passionate and determined and as she goes further in her career I think she'll take on more tougher roles and I think she'll ace them because I think even at the young age of 23 she shows signs of versatility in her acting.

Rooney Mara, 28, maybe not that young but started out around the same time as J-Law in her career, is also very passionate and talented. She was great in David Fincher's adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And in a more recent film, Side Effects, she totally outshone her co-stars. I loved her in that role. Her facial expression and voice tone coincided perfectly with the persona of her character. She absolutely nailed it.

I see bright futures for these two young stars. And I will certainly keep a hawk's eye on them as they progress through their careers. I won't be surprised if Lawrence adds to her already one Oscar and if Mara gets her maiden Oscar in the future.

First of all who is your favorite actor/actress?
Probably...Tom Hanks. Kevin Spacey is VERY close.

And then who do you think is the greatest actor of all time?

Haven't watched enough older movies to judge yet. I'm biased towards Hanks, but I must admit DDL is ridiculous. Could be him. I'd have to watch more older movies.

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?

It's a shame because both of them churn out impressive movies continuously. I can't say I know what they need to do to win an Oscar. I rate them higher than many that have won Oscar's, however.

Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a good pick. I've liked him since he first started getting parts in movies. I liked him back in 3rd rock from the sun :lol:I think that another actor who has a lot of potential is Paul Dano, he's starting to really break out right now and rightly so, some of his performances are fantastic and he's consistently quite good. He's kind of young yet and I look forward to continuing to watch him, I don't think he's reached his potential yet.

Who are some underrated actors?

Edward Norton.

Keeping it fairly brief because I'm on limited time, but I'm willing to discuss more in the future.

I watch very few movies so please don't abuse

First of all who is your favorite actor/actress (I know there are plenty but try choosing just 1)?

Difficult between Hugh Jackman, Di Caprio and Christian Bale but I'd go with Christian Bale.

And then who do you think is the greatest actor of all time (or at least who do you think a mention up there, and doesn't necessarily have to be your favorite actor)?

Egh, Leonardo Di Caprio or Arnold Schwarzenegger but I'd go with the former

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?

Honestly Di Caprio has done enough to win it. Just doesn't win it for some reason. There is nothing more he can do.

Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?

No idea lol, Ryan Gosling perhaps

Greatest actor of all time, Arnold :hmm:can't figure out an abusive comment that suits, so I'll leave it be Laughing You're still a solid lad though Proud

First of all who is your favorite actor/actress (I know there are plenty but try choosing just 1)?
My favourite actor/actress. This one is so hard to be honest, there is just so many. And since there is only coming a movie out once a year (if they are that productive), it's hard to only have one IMO.
There is Benedict Cumberbatch, loved him since Starter for 10 and Atonement, great performances that really showcased that he had some serious potential. Then there is Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, those two doesn't need an explanation, because their work say everything by itself. To round out my top 5, is Michael B Jordan and Ryan Gosling, 2 up and coming stars. Michael B. Jordan has something really special, which was easy to see from his first season on The Wire, up until his amazing performance last year in Fruitvale Station. Ryan Gosling is also a great actor, that can deliver great performances without much dialogue, do to the way he uses his face and body to express himself. Tom Hardy, Christian Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal are joined 6th place. So hard to choose ffs, and no women apparently Laughing

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?
Robert De Niro is my best choice as the best ever, the guy has done everything, comedy, drama and action.
Haven't seen much of Marlon Brando, but his reputation and his role in Godfather alone is reason to put him on this list.
Also Daniel Day Lewis for his method acting.

Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?
Michael B. Jordan, this guy is a guaranteed multiple oscar winner at some point.
Dane DeHaan.
Miles Teller, could also be a great actor at some point, I see some potential.
Liam James, kid from The Way Way Back, delivered a mesmerizing performance in that film.
Joseph Gordon Levitt (if he still qualifies)
Chris Hemsworth.
Jennifer Lawrence, just to put a female on the list, also my favourite female, and very young Laughing

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?
DiCaprio has to get fair treatment from the Academy, he was obviously cheated in 05, his performance in The Aviator was way better than Jamie Foxx' imo. And the amount of times he has not even been nominated... his role in Django was so freaking great.
Brad Pitt just has to pick some more challenging roles, since his best roles was in the 90's. 12 Monkeys was probably his best shot, he was amazing in that film.

Who are some underrated actors?
James McAvoy, loved him in most roles he has been in.
Steve Carell, this guy can act when given the right role.
Ben Affleck, guy isn't the best actor, but he has improved and gets too much unjustified hate.
George Clooney, amazing actor, feel like he is underrated by the mainstream, due to his good looks and charm, probably like Brad Pitt also is.

Actors that I absolutely can't stand
Had to add this category Laughing
Shia LeBeouf, seriously, I refuse to believe anyone can stand this guy, awful, annoying and useless.
Tobey McGuire, hate this guy, seems so useless, and that spider-man 3 film :lol:that emo-look and the dance to go with it No

I'm a big DiCaprio fan, I watch all his movies since Romeo & Juliet (except The Beach, won't watch it neither has shit ratings) and honestly the guy is so good. IMO he should have won the Oscar for his performance in The Aviator. That performance was so sick. Like someone above said I think he has done enough to earn one (not so sure on Brad Pitt, he can still improve). I don't think DiCaprio will ever get one now. For some reason the Academy has something against him.

Ok. Anyway, my favourite actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. With Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Christian Bale behind.

Actors to watch out for: Paul Dano (agree with everything CBarca said), J. Gordon-Levitt. Only ones I can think of now.

Underrated: Jake Gyllenhaal, Edward Norton, James McAvoy.

Overrated: Tom Cruise (just wanted to do this Laughing)

Greatest of all time: Haven't watched any Brando movies except for The Godfather, so with that said I can safely say that it is Daniel Day-Lewis imo.

RG, you are basically inviting to be abused by naming Arnold Laughing

First of all who is your favorite actor/actress (I know there are plenty but try choosing just 1)?

Of all time, it's Robert De Niro. This man is an artist. Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, The Godfather II, Once Upon A Time In America, Goodfellas, The Untouchables, Casino, Heat etc the amount of great performances he gave in great movies are ridiculous. The 'you talking to me scene?' in Taxi Driver, smoking in Goodfellas, killing Fanucci in Godfather, this guy has so many iconic scenes. And his acting BAH GAWD his acting. Currently my favourite is Leonardo Di Caprio. Modern GOAT. So many GOAT roles in so many movies. Shutter Island, Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Departed, J Edgar are my top 5 Di Caprio roles. Can't wait to watch The Wolf Of Wall Street.

And then who do you think is the greatest actor of all time?

Daniel Day Lewis or Marlon Brando. These two brings acting to a whole new level.

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?

lol Academy will never give it to them. Even still, maybe a really good performance in a movie released around November in a year where there is little competition. Will never happen but they are still legends.

Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?

Jennifer Lawrence (already won an Oscar Proud ), Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan

Who are some underrated actors?

Matthew McConaughey, Casey Affleck, Hugh Jackman, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Edward Norton, Michael Fassbender.

Michael B. Jordan was also great in Fruitvale and should get an Oscar nom, but I doubt he will get it, do to him being relatively unknown.
Dane DeHaan was great in Lawless and The Place Beyond the Pines (loved that movie btw, one of the most original movies in a long time). I look forward to seeing him as The Green Goblin in Spiderman2.

Favorite Actress: Tough one...straight toss up between Dame Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep.

I haven't watched enough movies throughout the span of time to answer this question honestly. I do believe Daniel Day-Lewis is the best of the current generation. Beyond him, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Johnny Depp, and Denzel Washington are serious contenders for me.

What do guys like DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to do to win an Oscar?

There's not much else either can do. They've both just come up against more compelling contenders. I think it's inevitable that they're going to get one. That or they'll end up like John Malkovich, who despite being one of the best method actors out there in the past 25+ year...still doesn't have an Oscar.

Who are some upcoming actors/actresses with insane amounts of potential?

Actors - Daniel Radcliffe, Logan Lerman, Michael B. Jordan
Actresses - Chloe Grace-Moretz, Saoirse Ronan, Quvenzhane Wallis

Actors - John Malkovich, Anthony Mackie, Rufus Sewell
Actresses - January Jones, Anna Gunn, Indira Varma

Yeah and maybe Arnold is also like a hero to RG. Like maybe when he was younger he watched one epic action flick that Arnold starred in and was like, "I wanna be just like this guy."

I felt like that about Tom Cruise when I saw Mission Impossible 2. Was literally in love with that scene when he kicks up the gun from the sand on top of the mountain and shoots the villain.
But later on I realised Cruise is far from being all that.
