That's more of a controlling team than a counter attacking side so pace up front is nullified to an extent.

Kagawa is toast. januazi will alternate with mata for the starting spot.

He did Nick, but thankfully abandoned it. At start of the season we played pivot of Gerrard-Lucas with Henderson in front of them and kept getting over-ran especially in second half of games. Also all our CBs were in good form back then, so he wanted to get them playing as much as possible (Kolo had a great start) So he turned into 5-3-2 to give more stability to midfield and play both SAS up front. It exposed our wing backs and we didn't have as much control over the games.

He kept tweaking until he somehow came up with this revolutionary idea of switching to a 1-2 midfield with Gerrard as the sole holding midfielder, and converting Coutinho into a CM....which was the base for the 11 game winning run.

4 at the back formations allow for more dynamism and flexibility imo. 5 at the back means no wingers and it's harder to create chances with it when you've got the ball. It's more of a reactive formation.

Also why is a 5-3-2 called a 3-5-2? So it doesn't sound defensive? If the wingbacks defend it's a 5-3-2. If they don't then it's a 3-5-2.

a simple 442 can cause unheard problems to that formation, it all depends on personnel

I like 3 at back and it is very defensively sound formation. It gives you numerical advantage at the back at the same time it gives balance and can fill in the whole of the pitch.

Yet,ultimately when you face a team that is sitting deep you wants to push more bodies forward. 3 CBS and one DM will not get anywhere near the goal . That is 4 less players to worry about for those ptb teams. We saw perfect example of this in the WC.Dutch simply lacked numerical advantage against Costa Rica and Argentina... Both of them defended deep and were comfortable with the numerical advantage they had.

At the same time with 442.. against deep defences you can push both fullbacks forward and at maximum you will have 2 CBS and a DM uninvolved in the final third play. That is 3 payers. At this level of play having one more player to worry about is crucial.

I give credit to Bielsa for the back 3 idea. My ideal formation went from 4-2-1-3 to 3-4-3 or basically anything with a back 3.
