Vermaelen appreciation thread

I have nothing against Vermaelen and I don't think any of you should either. He saved his reputation by not going to United and thus he will be remembered in good light among the Arsenal fan base.

Vermaelen was a fan favourite in his first two seasons. Had some excellent matches and his leadership wasn't that bad either. And an improvement over Fabregas' too. He has been a model professional throughout his Arsenal career. Didn't make a fuss when benched and is quietly moving on. Apparently rejected a bigger paycheck from United to move to Barcelona as well.

Thought we should have a thread for him.

Always disliked Vermaelen but only because of his footballing abilities, otherwise he's a cool guy, much like Djourou.

Got dropped but still remained professional and never moaned, even during the all transfer thing he kept quiet and didn't say anything bad about the situation.

maybe because some below par defenders we have had post emirates era+plus his Goals and Passion he showed we tended to over look his flaws he was such fan favorite back then before 2012

One of my favorite players, I was hoping he would stay and lift the EPL with Arsenal but I understand he wants to play. I am sad he is leaving but also happy for him and wish him all the best.

He was injured and we kept him, he lifted the FA cup, he should have demonstrated HIS LOYALTY instead he wants to leave. Is he afraid of not playing he should have fought for his place. He has a weak mentality and I don't like his attitude, I will not appreciate him.

Didn't he score like 5 goals in quick succession (for a defender) when you guys got him? I think I remember something like that. Hype was unreal from Arsenal fans I talked to in real life.

well the hype was warranted at the time particularly given he had his "best years ahead of him". Hes still a quality player. Hence why Barca and Utd are interested.

Was one of those who was a bit pissed when he got dropped for Per eventually.
I still think he is a quality defender. Won't be surprised if he becomes a regular in the Barca starting line-up.

one of my favourite players.. really sad that we lost a passionate player.. was an instant hit in his first season.. he was best suited for our all attack passing game.. and will really suit Barcas style.. i hope he can achieve more at Barca.. never moaned when benched and was truely professional suring the window too..

Incredible business for us, all things considered. He cost Arsenal €10-12m back in '09, and after a great first season and then a lot of bench time ... he's going for €15-19m. With just one year left on his contract.

Sometimes Barca transfer behavior mystifies me.

That said, I honestly think he'll do well enough at Barcelona.
