Volcanic Eruption

Right now, there is a pretty cool looking fissure eruption ongoing at Iceland. Here's a webcam with a live feed:

Was praying that it wouldn't explode last week, was reading the news on it all week

Well, it's spitting out quite some volcanic ash now, too:



Dunno if the airspace must be shut down already or if the wind blows the stuff into a direction where it doesn't hurt too much.

Well, there is a 1000m long fissure from which lava flows out. I guess you could count that as eruption. Dunno if there will be something bigger still.

I thought this was this was the biggest one in Iceland, so was expecting something larger then last time

Yeah, the whole fissure system is huge, and there are still earthquakes in the magnitude 5 to 5.7 range, so it is of course possible that there will be more. But with volcanoes you never know - they could as easily go to sleep as they could go really boom. ^^

Is it still going on for 2 days?

Yeah. Could go on for weeks even. We are talking about lava/magma coming from a plume that reaches down into the region between earth's mantle and outer core and thus would originate in about 2880km depth.

To clear this up, The volcano is not going to blow like the last big one, it is a different lava type, this one is less viscus therefore it is more of a flow and will not build up and explode like the one in 2012?

This eruption is more like the ones in Hawaii than those that create massive explosions and scatter ash everywhere.

Well, the problem is actually the fact that the volcano proper lies under the glacier. If the fissure opens under the glacier, then it could indeed blow and erupt lots of ashes that disturb the flight traffic like the Eyjafjallajökull, but it wouldn't be a plinian eruption like one would expect from a volcano like the Vesuvius, but it would still be rather liquid lava, but the boom would result from lava meeting ice and vaporising that. The current eruption is on ice-free ground some kilometres away from the glacier.

This is from webcam Bárðarbunga 1 which is a bit farther away. The view from webcam Bárðarbunga 2 is currently a bit grainier - probably it is obscured by the steam and smoke.
