Hi guys, long time since my last post, haven't been reading forums much since Goal.com forums closed, tbh. Good to see most of the guys are here.

As you might have noticed, the likes of Belletti, Sylvinho,Canavarro and now, Vieira, in addition to the ultimate O Fenomeno, Ronaldo, have all called it a day. I just have to say it is apparent that our Generation(most of us,I believe from the 90s class) now have our own base of players to gawk over and overrate in the eyes of the next generation. Sort of like how some guys say Maradona and etc. are invincible.... Guess we'll say the same about Zizou, Batigol and Ronaldo who we grew up idolising. How do you guys feel about the realisation that our generation is moving on? and overrate in the eyes of the next generation.

lari, nice thought. Yes it's true that even though every summer brings about some change in the old guard, this time it's more than usual.

It's also true that people have a fondness for those who played during their time and who they watched live. We tend to overrate them as you said - even more so if they played for our club and/or country. Smile

Among the generation you are mentioning the two most outstanding players by and large by common consensus are Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo. After that it can be more subjective. I know a lot of people on these forums admire Rivaldo and he is almost sure to be in the next list of greats after those two that I mentioned. As you said Batistuta too will be there. As far as personal favorites go, you know this already that I think very highly of Pavel Nedved. It's rarely that I have seen a top quality player with so much heart to fight against all limitations and odds and still make the difference quite often. Other than that I have to mention Thierry Henry since I was a fan of him for several years. If we go a little further back then two names that are bound to come up are Roberto Baggio and Marco van Basten. Lothar Matthaus as well. Of course there are many others.

Yes I know that. I also included some of those who are playing football but no longer playing top level competitive football in Europe.

Maybe. If you say so I will believe you. It's said that Diego Maradona can still take free kicks very well. Some footballing skills don't diminish with age. Smile
