Not hans, but it's because he wants someone who can switch the play from deep, and Alonso is one of the best at that. Vidal hasn't exactly looked that good for Bayern so far TBH.

He knew Vidal is a log... can't understand this signing if it wasn't to replace Alonso and use Thiago as the only creator or together with Alaba.

That's not what Vidal was signed for though. He was signed, I presume, to add grit against the ball to a midfield where Alonso is deep, as we all know Alonso ..er.. isn't very great against the ball and Alonso-Schweini was doubling down on a certain slowness.
The understudy for Alonso is Kimmich.
Pep's default midfield in a 4-3-3 so far was Alonso-Thiago-Vidal, yet when we're playing 4-1-4-1 Vidal is dropped in favour of another attacker.

Vidal played once in that lone role but that was with 5 strikers in front of him in a Pep experiment.
Vidal hasn't been that good so far but I'm assuming he's still suffering from that Copa in summer.

Having Alonso as a single pivot can punish Bayern against good teams. He is very past it and never was one to cover a lot of ground. Room for improvement for Bayern there.

True.
That being said, Pep doesn't start him to cover a lot of ground, he starts him to dictate play, and requires others to cover and win challenges further ahead, i.e. Vidal.

I agree though, the midfield is a bit of an unsolved problem still, and I wish Kimmich would get to play instead of Alonso a little bit more often.

Also while we are at it Hans please tell me why is Gotze arguably the best young talent devoid of playing time( I know now he is injured). It is very frustrating to see him play 10 mins every game. Does he not fit in Pep scheme or is there something else. Get feeling that pep doesn't have many plans for him. There is excuse that present team is already stacked and there is no place for him to start. I don't agree with tbh when u can play day in day out youngsters like Coman and Costa there surely is place for 'world cuip winner'.

Kimmich has looked good, but he's young and inexperienced.
Hope he gets to start in BuLi once in a while to give Alonso a rest soon.

Rode is more the Vidal type, injured at the moment.

Götze got quite some game time beginning of the season, bad injury right when he was starting to perform well.

“What I want, my desire, is to have 100% possession,” the Bayern manager said.

Pep Proud

“We wanted to control the game but we allowed a lot of counters,” Guardiola said. “This was not correct and we have to improve on that, definitely.”

“In important matches, there are players who might be afraid but Thiago is extraordinary in such matches,” Guardiola said. “He was injured over the last two years and now, he is really fit. But he needs to understand that with his skills, he has the possibility to be an even better player. There are times when he loses the ball without being pressured so he has to work on that. He has to interpret his game so that his passes can cause danger.”

“People say that ball possession might not be the most important thing but for me, it is the most important thing,” Guardiola said. “It’s the first step and then the second, third and fourth steps can come after. With the ball, you have more possibilities to create something and to concede fewer chances.

“I have a lot of respect for my players and when they decided to become footballers, they wanted to play with the ball. It’s not only about running. It’s all about having the ball, playing and dealing with the ball. Because we have had the ball, we have scored a lot of goals and haven’t conceded a lot.”

“This is the best team of my era here,” Guardiola said. “People want to see successful football, to see attacking football with all 10 outfield players and we need some time for that. This is now our third year together, there have been a lot of matches and discussions, and we know each other much better now. I know my players better. We know what we want.

“People might think that I came to Bayern and knew the players immediately but no. You need time for that. It’s a lot better this year. We have improved. It’s not perfect yet because in the second half against Arsenal, we conceded but it’s a lot better than before.”
