Watched A Most Violent Year last night. Really enjoyed it. I am now fully on board with the Oscar Isaac hype. Dude can act.

What I got most from this movie is that these "older, stressed out housewife" roles should be going to Jessica Chastain instead of JLaw. She was terrific.

Loved it. Disagree with "best ending in years" but it was an ending that perfectly suited the film, and you can't really ask for much more than that. Like the ending of 1984, it's nothing special in its own, but in the sense that it perfectly suits the novel, it's quite brilliant. For me, I don't think you can want the ending any other way, and that's when you know you've nailed it

Yeah and that's why the ending was predictable.
It falls in with the overused idea that robots/AIs are not humans, therefore they won't operate on the same emotional levels as humans, therefore they will leave us in the cold and try to manipulate us.

We all know this because it has been talked about in real life debates all over the world and also been used in other films multiple times before.

Back from The Revenant.

Fantastic film. Outstanding cinematography, visuals, Direction and acting. The storytelling was so good. Wasn't an extraordinary nor a special plot but it didn't attempt to make it one either. The film's depth in every scene was amazing. There were parts where there was no dialogues spoken for minutes but it wouldn't bother you because of how the scenery was talking instead.

The acting by Di Caprio and Tom Hardy was 10/10. Tom Hardy was unreal. Outshone Di Caprio in parts. Such a fantastic actor.

I think both deserve to win the oscars. I would be surprised if Leo doesn't win it this time. This is finally his year.

That bear scene was :bow:

Mad Max is still my film of the year and I think George Miller deserves the best director award but I won't be surprised nor complain if Inarritu wins it. Same for best Picture. Expecting Revenant to destroy the oscars for most categories though.

I think I would place The Revenant as my no 2 of the year with Star wars 3rd. Might change the order after Hateful Eight

Predictability, I really don't give a shit about that term, doesn't make it worse, doesn't make it better.

Also the red part I feel is a misreading of the ending, in the same way people misread Hal9000.

I just think the ending is perfect for the story and it sets up so many great ethical discussions and is greatly written. It's the only way it should have ended and could have ended, but that is just good writing. I really love how the movie thinks of AI as more than villains and actually show them as real emotional beings. It's also great seeing how it makes the viewer think about the ethical things about creating an AI and if you can ethically defend killing them, if you've created it.

He was a mad genius. I always got the feeling that Nathan wanted to create a creature like Ava who was able (and have the want) to escape which would essentially mean he had created his magnum opus.

The chess game analogy was fantastic imo. One of my fav scenes in that film.

Yeah those are good points you bring up Freeza.

But the thing about predictability is that sometimes you basically just watch something which you have seen before. Like for instance you complained about Christoph Waltz "same character" in Django as in Basterds, that's predictability. So you can't casually say you don't care about predictability. Even more so when moviegoers always cry out for 'something new' and criticises that which is 'generic'. And that's ultimately the feeling I got from it. Predictabiliy, and it's a good point. The feeling that I have seen and heard this message before, it is just being told in another way with additional shiny objects and cinematography. Some of the scenes were very good I won't deny, I liked the pacing and the character interactions, but still all of that made me feel it was building up towards something surprising and different for an ending. So I was kind of expecting that and just waiting for that, to be blown away by the ending, and then when it came in the way it came, I was left disappointed. But like you and CB said how else could it have ended. Then the problem probably is the whole film being predictable like RG said.

Seems like me and him have the same feeling about it. We obviously all here understand the film and what it is trying to do, but for some it worked brilliantly, while for others it just didn't do it that much unfortunately.

4 and 5 dont matter as i have seen like 5 2015 films in 2015 ffs.

Need to watch Inside Out, H8 and Room to determine the proper order

In 2001, editor Marty Baron of The Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson, reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church.

That's basically the plot.
The way all of that is told though is what makes the film astonishing. It's a methodical, detailed reali life informative thriller with fantastic performances. Nothing fancy and explosive, so if you want that then you probably shouldn't watch it. But again, it's such a good biographical drama thriller that I would insist you should reconsider.
