It's a smart move and way to remove the myth out of the number by assigning it to a player we know has 0 expectation or chance to be that good.

Had it been given to Asensio, it would have been much more pressure on his shoulders to live up to it, to be the new Raul. That's the last thing Asensio needs, he is still developing and finding his way as a talent and player.

Not contradictory. No one expects much from Mariano (including himself). So you could give him that legendary number and R9's boots and still people wouldn't blame him for any lack of goals.

Asensio on the other hand is very talented and people already expects him to deliver. Giving him that number would put even more pressure on him and stagnate his development.

Does anyone recall three seasons ago when Mayoral and Mariano were with Castilla?

Mayoral was new scoring kid in the academy and has jumped several levels to be on that team, while Mariano was several years older, a late bloomer. I recall Turok saying Mayoral should be on first team, behind Benz rather than bring Morata back. Mariano was viewed as an after thought, while Mayoral, thought to be the better one was sent out on loan to develop.

He was benched at the end of last season and the results significantly improved, he was also benched this season with Fekir not even back yet, he was not gonna start this season either as soon as Fekir was back into the team

Traore,Memphis and Fekir are just better options offensively, they were ahead of him in the pecking order.

It's not that he's a bad player, Lyon's offensive line is just really good.

Wow, whats happening with Real, must be the managers desire to use the Spanish youth, lets see how they do, but u cant help but feel he will be one of the weakness no.7 for Real obviously... good thing for us

Read that Real actually paid like over 20M to buy him back from the Lyon loan? Perez has really changed so much, in the past obviously he woulda just use that 20M as part of a bigger sum to buy one of the big stars...

I really don't mind having Mariano as a back-up. My main problem lies with Benzema, a guy who wouldn't start for any of the CL contenders, but somehow continues to start for Madrid.

So he started 30 out of 34 games and he suddenly became a bench player. He started the first 2 games of this season while having his mind elsewhere. Could be due to Fekir also having his mind elsewhere but lol to call him a bench player is a stretch even with all these hypotheses

They might play better without him I don't know but to conclude that he was a bench player based on the last 2-3 games of the season

If he was benched it'd probably be that petty Memphis' doing. Got jealous he was outshone so probably threw a hissy fit.
