I had posted this on another forum when we lost Diaz and then Jota (outside the 7-8 players Liverpool are constantly missing) but Varane is just another addition to the list, players losing 4 career years because of this winter world cup. The list will only increase.

Absolutely. Far too many winners in this team to go home with a loss against a newly promoted team with Lingard as their talisman tbh

You didn't answer my question? It must be a record if true. I can understand if Liverpool had very little or no possession but out of a total 690 passes, Salah only attempted 4 ffs. Was he desperate for personal glory again Laughing

I'm not trolling, lol. Maybe I'm just getting old and demented. I recall you talking about seeing that random encounter guy who you thought looked like yourself. And then I think you stopped playing the game. And then you mentioned the Goro Majima part, but I think you stopped playing again. Can't keep track of your stop/start progress, man. What did you think about the game? I know a few of our members finished the game and summarized what they thought about it. You may have talked about it before, but I got you mixed up with someone else.

You gave him a good fight last season though.

I agree about this year though. It's hard to compete against a team that has a cheat code for a striker.

I have to give credit to the Bald Fraud though. This sort of brutal league dominance where one team wins 4 of the last 5 leagues was only done by SAF before him:

I get the impression that the key to league dominance is to regularly replace players who are getting older and perhaps losing some of their drive and enthusiasm towards competing for the same trophies over and over again. Rotating players probably helps keep them fresh and motivated as well, as it helps prevent burnout - which is something Pep does more than most managers. Short tournaments like, the Champions League are probably easier to compete in multiple times, as they only consist of a few matches and half of them are typically against top opposition. League trophies require more sustainable focus and consistency, which you naturally lose to some extent when the trophy is already in your possession and the goal has already been reached.

SAF managed to do so with relatively unknown players, though, which I think is particularly impressive. Before they came to United, I probably wouldn't have placed any bets on the likes of John O'Shea, Jonny Evans, Ji Sung Park and friggin Mikael Silvestre to win the league title, but Ferguson made it work with a lot of local talent and well scouted players from other nations that served a particular purpose in the squad. Nowadays, they seem to mostly target whichever established talent is available for positions that need upgrading, regardless of their age, positional flexibility or sets of skills.

This is what Klopp recenlty said
“Stability, closing gaps we left open in the weeks before – not on purpose, it just happened,” he said on the benefits of what has become an unfashionable 4-4-2 formation in modern football.

“We played for quite a time a specific system in a specific way and when you get used to things you lose a little bit of the desire for the detail.

“Because it was so well tuned how we defended or how we pressed then little things can change a lot.

“That is why we had to change a big thing to start thinking new about it as a group. It is actually not a big difference, a change of responsibility slightly.

“It all depends who is available, who is fit. When we started 4-4-2 we had two more strikers available – it feels like long ago but it’s only 10 days we had two more.

“So we have to stay open for all different possibilities to what we can do and we will.

“It is about what is best for us, and what is the worst for the opponent.”
Klopp is trying to do what Pep is doing and what SAF successfully, just by changing the system a bit. It is clear that Klopp had almost same set of players performing at the highest level for many years now. It is going to take a mental and physical toll on the players. It is just natural.

As successful as SAF was, the situation was a bit different back then. I would say what SAF did was way more impressive than what Pep is doing right now. At the same time, Pep has amazing ability to rotate the squad, still manages to get results game after game.

Don't about record etc but he played alone uptop and we were pinging long balls to him and he had 3 players each time. VVD had the top 3 best chances and Alisson was our Motm, should tell us how we went about the match.

But since you love bringing Liverpool up, the fruits harvested 2 years back also no? Went for the Quad next season. Don't worry you are enjoying same situation as the United finishing second season while other teams can't put the same eleven like you every game week. We'll be back for challenging next season and you'll as usual be wrong about everything you say about LFC

Awful second half last weekend vs Leeds. Pretty toothless and fatigued 2nd half today. First signs of weakness for Arsenal this season. Europa League fatigue kicking in most probably.

Mate ask Liverpool fans, what it feels like to compete against City Laughing , every draw feels like a defeat and very disappointing. But nothing to worry about, as Arsenal are still getting results after results so far at least.
Talking about Europa league, the later stages haven't been even kicked yet. That time you will have to play your regular players as you will start facing better teams. Not sure how much you are rotating now in EL, I remember seeing your team sheet once and I could recognize like only 3 or players.

rotation is decent so far... if somehow we are still top by March, even if it's only by one point, i feel like we should prioritise the league... because honestly fuck the Europa league who cares... worst case scenario at least we still get top 4

but ya i get what you mean... you are going up against an Oligarch machine so every game feels vital because you know City won't have many slip ups.

Let's see how we respond, we just didn't look as hungry today as we did earlier in the season... if we're already fatigued by now, then that's just bullshit...

Games left before WC break:
Forest (H)
Chelsea (A)
Brighton (H)
Wolves (A)

all tricky games, but i challenge us to win all of em.

I could be wrong, but I don't think you stand a chance to win the league. City is way too strong for you. Even last season Liverpool failed to win it against them and they were much stronger than you.

I would be happy to be proven wrong though. I don't have a favorite club in England, but I would rather see Arsenal win it than City.

2022/2023 Premier League Discussion - Page 30 Empty Re: 2022/2023 Premier League Discussion

Post by futbol_bill Sun Oct 23, 2022 8:21 pm

I wanted to respond to earlier posts about the need for rotations to be able to compete in multiple competitions.

Before I write what I think is happening with the top clubs, I first want to repeat a post I just made in another thread about the economics of today’s game.

“ It’s a question of understanding the economics of today’s game. Reality is there are less than 10 clubs (2 in Spain, one in Germany and one in France, rest are in EPL) that can buy and pay the top players. Generally the salary structure is such that even the bottom dwellers on these teams are paid higher than others teams in general making it difficult to move underperformers. They generally, depending on country and basic business principles have to keep the true gross salary load (not the net that is usually reported) within the club’s operating income as well as other operating expenses. Of the 10 clubs, even with the EPL television revenues, not all of them have the same budget capacity such as City, Man U and perhaps Chelsea (depends on new owner) have.”

I believe it has always been necessary to have significant rotations to be able to compete in multiple competitions, but the pressure has increased in past several years due to the intense schedules including international games and the inevitable injuries that result. And now with the marketplace having a very limited number of teams that can buy top players, I think there is a movement within these top teams to have 12 to 15 so called starters having regular rotations. But not all of the 10 clubs can afford that and there are also at least a couple of them that make poor acquisitions  or put too much of salary load into top 2 or 3 players.
