i can't believe no one mentioned pirlo. Even if he isn't as good as he once was, i think he is right up there amongst the best

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
This season Ronaldo scored 2 with NT and 1 or 2 with us. this is 4 for him this season already. and one of his freekicks a few weeks ago for Portugal NT was just brilliant.

Don't like the guy, but he had an awesome free kick back in his day. More likely to score than not.

He has been consistent with the amount he hits and always misses atleast 10-12 times the amount he scores.
some actual statistics would be nice... especially comparing him to juninho

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
ronaldo is good at freekicks but thats about it. He misses 40 of them to score 1.
Although he was much better at them back at man united
There are no one as good as the players in the past.
Most are "good" or "decent"

How about you bring them to the table or stfu.
The point is that he has a similar free kicks per season average. Also don't even try to argue that Juninho didn't take all of Lyon's free kicks when he was there for 8 years.
But hey Juninho probably scored 43 free kicks from 43 attempts right? RIGHT?!?

probably more than 43, but i'm sure everyone here will agree that considering ronaldive blasts 19/20 of his free kicks into the wall/into the stands, juninho had a far better free kick taken/free kick scored ratio, making him better at taking free kicks... you're saying ronaldive is just as good, and as always, the burden of proof is on the claimant, so stats or gtfo

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
My argument was based on the freekick goals per season stat. I'm saying how many attempts is probably moot anyway because in eight freakin' years Juninho probably took loads of freekicks and netted 43. He probably took many free kicks that didn't go in.
I didn't bring it up because to me it isn't important. You are saying it is, burden of proof is on you

player A can score 5 out of 50 attempts, player B 5 out of 120 so judging which one of them is better without considering how many attempts it took them is short sighted at best, making your initial claim fallacious in the first place

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
Except Ronaldo doesn't take 120 free kicks a season. Probably not even half as much as that.
Again how different can the numbers be? They have a similar rate of goals and Juninho as designated free kick taker for 8 years at Lyon must have missed loads as well, probably less than Cris but not as much as some of you like to believe.
Also I claimed Ronaldo was on a similar level as Juninho atm, I made no claims about who was better than who
My claim still stands

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
Juninho scored 43 free kicks in 38 attempts, I don't need to back this up at all since Juninho is the ancient Greek god of deadball situations.

lovely article
last year tino costa scored 2 free kicks, ronaldive scored 4... the kicker is that tino took 4, ronaldive 52
that's 50% vs 7% effectivity

Now bar Cristiano ronaldo, (who IMO is not at the same level as the previously mentioned) there aren't many players who distinguish themselves for being great freekickers
I blame the new balls.

Hardly means anything though. Ronaldo would take a free kick from the parking lot behind the Bernabeu if he could.
Also if Tino took 52 free kicks from the same positions that Ronaldo took them would he have got more than 4? Maybe but the numbers you posted don't suggest that at all.
All in all it's a useless stat. It would be like me saying that I have the same number of premier league winner's medals as Steven Gerrard, it's funny but it doesn't mean much

Re: What happened to the great free kickers?
I thought that the freekick cristiano scored against bosnia was more down to bad positioning by the keeper.
