August 17 - Makes full Argentina debut as second-half substitute in Hungary, only to be shown a red card within two minutes.
September - Granted EU passport by Spanish government.
2006: May - Helps Barca retain Primera Division title and win Champions League, although he misses out on UCL final win over Arsenal in Paris due to injury.
June 16 - Becomes youngest player to represent Argentina at a World Cup with substitute appearance against Serbia and Montenegro. Also nets final goal in 6-0 win to become fifth youngest goalscorer in World Cup history.
2007: July - Named Young Player of the Tournament after helping Argentina to Copa America final, where it loses to Brazil.
December 2 - Finishes third behind Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo in Ballon d'Or voting.
December 13 - Again misses out to Kaka, this time finishing second to the Brazilian in FIFA World Player of the Year poll.
2008: July 3 - Included in Argentina squad for Olympic Games in Beijing, prompting protracted dispute between the Argentinian federation and Barcelona, who want the player available for Champions League qualifiers.
August 7 - Barca announce it will allow Messi to remain with Argentina squad for the duration of the Olympics.
August 23 - Helps Argentina to gold with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in the final in Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.

October 14: Helps Argentina reach the World Cup finals with 1-0 win in Uruguay.
December 1: Wins Ballon d'Or.
2010: April 6 - Scores four as Barcelona knock Arsenal out of the Champions League.
May - Equals Ronaldo's club record of 34 goals in a league season as Barca wins the Primera Division title again.
June - Plays every game as Argentina reaches quarter-finals of the World Cup before being knocked out by Germany.
November 20 - His second hat-trick of the season in Barca's 8-0 win over Almeria takes him to 100 goals in La Liga.
2011: January 10 - Wins FIFA Ballon d'Or.
May: Ends campaign having helped Barca to Champions League and Primera Division glory. Finishes the season with 50 goals in league, Copa del Rey and Champions League action.
August - Named Argentina captain by coach Alejandro Sabella.
December - Part of the Barcelona squad that wins the Club World Cup in Japan.
2012: January 9 - Retains FIFA Ballon d'Or prize.
Can't say anything bad about him at this moment. I personally thought Xavi should have won at least one of the awards in the last three years (probably 2009) but Mess is a truly incredible player and you don't win 3 Ballon D'ors in a row for nothing. I hope not, but let's see if he can retain this prize and win a fourth Ballon D'or in a row.

Re: Messi - Fifa Ballon Dor 2011
the greatest player ever
"Messi is amongst the best ever," Sir Alex Ferguson said
Fun fact:
A player can nowadays vote for a countryman, but he cant vote for himself.
Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of Portugal gave his vote to Nuno Gomes and was therefore voted first place and got 5 points. Desperate or what?
Hamit Altintop, captain of Turkey has played like 2 games with RM this season. Why would they sign him? Maybe cause he was worth 5 points for Cristiano Ronaldo?
Nice try Mourinho!
Well Messi won and they didnt even dare to show up. All that in vain :/

Re: Messi - Fifa Ballon Dor 2011
Messi at Club Level has won everything & more than once..
Messi at 24, has done everything for his Club & he can still get even better.. He's not just a very gd finisher, he's a playmaker.
[Dribbling, Passing, Vision, Finishing, Creativity etc.. he has it all]
What's most important that he's a Big game player.. He makes the difference in Big Matches..
I have no doubt that Messi will end up the best player ever on Club Level, when it comes to Overall including NationalTem performance, i don't know, Messi can at least play 2 more WorldCups (2014 at 27 & 2018 at 31) etc... so lets wait & see..

Whilst the stats will say that Messi is the best ever. I will still say it's R9, and it will take alot to change my opinion.
That being said, congrats to Messi. He deserves it.

Why may I ask are some ppl still so stubborn? The fact that Ronaldo still got 20% or so of votes....shows that there are still quite many who are quite blind to see just how good Messi is...
I love this thread And I would like to highlight that, Messi b4 winning these 3 straight awards, he came 2nd for 2 straight years and 3rd the year b4 that! Im sure nobody in history have been consistency the no.1 or no.2 or no.3 in the world for 6 straight years yea??
