Sunderland v Arsenal, Saturday 18th February, 5.15pm, FA cup 5th round

Sunderland v Arsenal Preview 260847-fbl-eng-pr-sunderland-arsenal
Thierry Henry's goal last weekend won the premier league fixture at Sunderland, but now he's gone

Two trips to Sunderland via Milan

It was always going to be a decisive week, as Wenger stated last Friday. Two trips up to Sunderland, with the AC Milan game in between, would test most sides, and it's certainly been a testing two games thus far for the gunners. The 2-1 win against at the Stadium of Light last Saturday sent Arsenal third, but the 4-0 defeat at the San Siro on Wednesday night effectively threw the gunners out of the Champions League. The return trip to Martin O'Neil's side tomorrow is set to test Wenger's men's mentality following the debacle in Italy.

Match Facts

The Gunners have won only two of their last seven FA Cup ties away from home.

Robin van Persie has scored seven goals in his last nine FA Cup appearances.

Arsenal’s first FA Cup tie under Arsene Wenger was against Sunderland, with the Gunners wining 2-0 at Roker Park in a 3rd Round replay in 1997.

The two clubs have been drawn together six times, with each side progressing on three occasions.

Sunderland have won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six FA Cup home matches.

The only three games Martin O’Neill has lost as Sunderland manager have been odd-goal defeats to Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Arsenal (in the Premier League last weekend).

Team News

Arsenal

Koscielny (knee), Jenkinson (back), Mertesacker (ankle), Wilshere (ankle), Diaby (hamstring), Frimpong (knee) and Santos (ankle) are all unavailable. Gervinho returns to the squad after international duty.

Sunderland

Cattermole is available after injury, but Vaughan (ankle), Brown (knee), Bendtner (ineligible), Bramble (calf), Angeleri (knee) and Gordon (knee) are all unavailable.

Manager's views:

Arsene Wenger

“We had a team [in 2002] that could go and win everywhere and when you can do that you get into the finals. Sometimes you lose the finals but most of the time we won finals. We had the potential to do it. Disappointments are a part of the game but we had previously always found the resources to get up again when it was down. That is what's at stake tomorrow.”

“On the pitch Henry was great and off the pitch he was great. He always maintained hope and positive morale in the team and I would like to thank him for that and wish him well for the rest of the season. I am sure he will have a great season with his club because he is quite sharp and I am confident that in the United States his team will do well with him.”

“Gervinho was very down when I spoke with him on Monday, now he is better and hopefully he can contribute on Saturday. We don't know [what impact the Africa Cup of Nations will have]. I see Yaya Toure played on Thursday night for Manchester City and sometimes the best thing to get things out of your system is to play a game and have a performance. When you are young it is important to focus on the next game and show you are a good player.”

Martin O'Neil

"I'm not here to defend Arsène Wenger. He doesn't need defending by me, who isn't his favourite character. Very little surprises me in the game now but I am surprised at the criticism surrounding him. His influence on English football has been immense. If he left tomorrow morning he would be considered Arsenal's greatest manager – and there have been some excellent ones. Much has been made of the fact they haven't won a trophy for seven years but during that time they have qualified for the Champions League each season. They have also recently lost some quality players of the sort that are hard to replace immediately."

"We are capable of winning. We have one or two players who can definitely cause Arsenal problems. You are assuming that they are a better passing team than us. So I will let you get on and assume that. I noticed it the season before last when I was managing at Aston Villa."

"I just think it's par for the course these days, people can make a statistic out of anything. It becomes your turn, then it flips around. Wenger made that point – if you win a couple of games it moves on to someone else for a while and comes back round again. While it remains like that you just have to live with it. It's symptomatic of the game today but not every single team can win the Premier League. That's not to say that managers of yesteryear weren't chased out though. Lets be fair, if you don't win enough games then you know that, eventually, you will be in trouble."

Some players need to be benched for this game

Song to calm down to earth.

Ramsey that is where he belongs.

Wlacott- must be benched.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would give RVP a rest he needs it, bring on second half to win the game.

going to be a tough game and even a tie would be a good result.

Please no Dejuru.

that side would own any side in the world.....well because there is 12 players on the field.

there no way we are going to play that side anyway, that would just heep more pressure onto wenger, wenger doesnt want that. we will play close to a full strength side

Expect a strong side. They have 8 days to reccover before the derby. Expect tired legs too. Draw would be ok.

Whoa whoa whoa, we actually need to win this game, so don't want to see too many 2nd stringers.....

No point in having Walcott/Gervinho and anyone who isn't RVP on at the same time because we simply won't score goals. Start anyone but Squillaci and keep Szczesny in goal

Lex, you are right and I am sure Wenger will start as strong as team he can, we cant lose this game the only cup we have a chance to win.

Freaked out when I saw the projected lineups, we barely squeezed out the win last week with a stronger side and now we're coming off of a huge loss so we'll be bereft of confidence, we can't afford to be lacking in quality.

doesnt always work like that, sometimes getting a proper kicking fires the team up for their next game
