Grimandi: Giroud signed to replace van Persie
Arsenal scout Gilles Grimandi has admitted striker Olivier Giroud is a direct replacement for want-away captain Robin van Persie.

The 28-year-old van Persie, who scored 30 English Premier League goals last season, last week announced his intention not to extend his deal with the north London club once it expires in mid-2013.

And former Arsenal defender Grimandi has now revealed that the capture of the former Montpellier forward was made with the Dutchman's future in mind.

Speaking to French website le10sport.com, Grimandi said: "Was the recruitment of Giroud made to compensate for his (van Persie's) departure? Yes, we worked to avoid being cornered.

"We want him to stay home but he is left with one year on his contract so it is complicated.

"At Arsenal, there is a healthy atmosphere, he's been here for eight years and he has a real commitment to the club."

Grimandi also said the former Feyenoord striker, who joined the club for 2.75 million pounds in 2004, has his price.

"If there is a great offer and if he wants to leave, it will be difficult to keep him," Grimandi said.

"I would never have thought that players such as Thiago Silva could be transferable and that was the case at a time. There are parameters you cannot handle."

Love how you put the red and blue there Razz

Surely Milan have entered the race now that they've sold Ibra.

We should hold out for £25-30million

His captaincy should be put under consideration though, like jay said, Gallas was stripped for something very similar.

Yes Gallas was stripped, however, RvP is on a different level than Gallas. It isn't right, but I just can't see him as anything but captain, even if I agree with what you are saying wholeheartedly.

The fact he might not have written it himself (okay, he didn't) is irrelevant. The statement is owned by him, whether his hand scribbled it down or not. He can read, I assume, so he didn't have to publish it if he didn't agree 100%.

Milan found the 60 mil bid so enticing because they're attempting to hack away at debt so I doubt they'd be willing to dish out so much for a 29 year old with a horrible injury record. Personally, I say anything above 15 million from a non-English club is worth considering because even if we received twice that from City we'd be strengthening direct rivals and if we let him play out his contract we're at risk of letting him sign for another English side for free so our hand has been forced so now we have to listen to cheap offers from outside the prem.

Should RVP go on the Asia tour?

I think its better to leave him behind and not have any problems and let another player take his minutes. We all know he has made up his mind not to stay at Arsenal the best thing is to deal with him asap.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Members of the Gunners hierarchy feel Van Persie's controversial statement was merely a ploy by the forward's agent Kees Vos to secure his client a better deal - reminiscent of Wayne Rooney's contract stand-off with Manchester United in 2010. hmm

But is City necessarily strengthened if they unload Tevez or Dzeko to buy Van Persie? I don't see that much difference. Plus if they buy Van Persie they're buying his injury history. He might not make it through the season. And even if he does, I'd be astonished if he ever has nearly as good a season as he did this past year. City would be better off in the long run with Dzeko than Van Persie. Take their money and let them keep playing musical strikers.

I agree its the same thing we are doing Podolski and Giroud can replace RVP, but I dont think RVP can replace Dzeko and Tevaz.

I guess only Juve will take RVP if he wants to leave. hmm
"Both Dzeko and Tevez will stay at City," Mancini told Sky Italia. "We are a great team and we try to keep all our great players. It won't be easy but they will stay here.

"We still lack a couple of players to reach [the level of] Real Madrid and Barcelona. Also our mentality has to grow season by season."

I'm pretty sure that's a combination of gratuitous amount of hair-gel and lighting. No one can go that grey in a month.
