Can we please have a serious discussion about Messi here. This is not about whether he is the best player in the world, which he is. It's not about whether he's a good team player on the pitch, he is. It's about the perceived view of him as humility personified, which might be true, or not. So I don't know what there is to be offended about (talking about some Barca fans). Do he really have to be the nicest guy ever as well?

The interesting thing about Messi is that we don't know anything about him. It's almost like he doesn't have a public persona. He's like a well trained media monkey, he have never ever given any single even remotely interesting quote publicly. Which is not strange considering the fact that he have been Adidas biggest name since he was, what? 18-19 years old? Earning 10s of millions of Euros every year from them. Of course they as well as other people in charge is going to have a say in who he is supposed to be publicly. In this case they decided that he should be the nice guy. It was especially fitting since Ronaldo (who was already established and on his way to becoming the biggest thing in football when Messi was coming of age) was perceived as a bad boy. Which I bet you that Nike love and encourage him to be. I work part time with PR and it's 101 to create this kind of contrast between what would become the two biggest brands in football today.

On the expense of Messi becoming a real human being.

In some ways Messi is the Justin Bieber of football. The PR factory got a hold on him at a too young age for him to have had a chance to develop into himself before he became their product.

And btw, even if every word of the OP article is true. It doesn't make Messi evil. It makes him human. People put expectations on their idols that is beyond what you expect of the real human beings in your own life.

For example, one of my best friends when described with bad intentions are a constantly weed smoking manwhore who have a tendency to get into fights when he's drunk. People who don't know him would probably describe him as a douche. He's still one of my best friend because when you know him there are nobody who is nicer and more loyal to you as a friend. Now imagine if he was a footballer, the headlines...
