All comps :coffee:

With two more goals, we will reach the same total as last year. Those two goals would also have seen us overtake City in the table last evening, with a game in hand.

Instead we conceded one. Rolling Eyes

34% of our goals conceded in the league have been headers - the most out of anyone in the league.

I know what I'm analyzing next hmm

Failing to defend crosses properly have been our downfall this season.

After looking at the goals, that's pretty much spot on.

That 34% converts into 11 goals. Of those 11 goals, 4 came from set-piece situations, 4 came from crosses from our right, and 3 came from crosses from our left.

Set-piece goals are a little trickier to analyse, so I'll leave those for another time and focus on the ones resulting from crosses.

Ulloa (Leicester 1 - 1 Arsenal)
-- Debuchy pushes high up the pitch to press ball carrier, fails to prevent pass into behind
-- Schlupp is too quick for the covering Mertesacker and Flamini and is able to cross first-time from the byline
-- Koscielny, who had suffered a head injury, incorrectly judges the flight of the ball and fails to meet it before Ulloa

Gomis (Swansea 2 - 1 Arsenal)
-- Swansea work ball out to Montero, who's close to right hand touchline. Chambers, who has been beaten for pace all game, backs off
-- Chamberlain provides inadequate cover for his full-back; he does not double up on Montero with Chambers, not tell Chambers to drop off and challenge the ball carrier himself
-- Montero knocks the ball past Chambers and is able to cross in from the byline
-- Gomis out-jumps Monreal, who was playing left centre back that game, at the back post

Gomis (Arsenal 0 - 1 Swansea)
-- Ramsey presses player on the ball, leaving a space in behind him that Sigurdsson moves into. Cazorla, the other sitting midfielder at the time, watches Sigurdsson move into space but does not move to cover that space, and ends up marking space that nobody else is occupying
-- Koscielny steps out to close Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson is able to play a one-two with Barrow around Monreal. Barrow is now in behind, and Koscielny is too high up the pitch to cover Monreal
-- Barrow's cross misses Gomis, but Bellerin fails to clear at the back post. The ball goes to Montero on the other side
-- Bellerin fails to close down Montero, instead standing off him and giving him a good three yards of space. Montero beats Bellerin 1v1, and crosses in close to the byline
-- Koscielny is caught under the flight of the ball, while Monreal is unable to physically match Gomis at the back post

Kane (Spurs 2 - 1 Arsenal)
-- Rose takes a throw in back to Bentaleb. Bentaleb has far too much time and space to measure a cross
-- Koscielny loses Kane in the box, and fails to cut out the cross

Abel Hernandez (Arsenal 2 - 2 Hull)
-- Ball is worked out to Arsenal left, Gibbs closes down Hull play when the rest of the defence are backing off
-- Huddlestone runs into the vacated space, and isn't followed by Wilshere, the closest midfielder, or covered by Monreal, who wasn't marking anyone at LCB
-- Mertesacker fails to attack the cross, and loses Hernandez in the box

Kouyate (West Ham 1 - 2 Arsenal)
-- Cazorla does close down Tomkins quickly, but is beaten 1v1. Tomkins cross from the byline
-- Kouyate is too strong in the air for Flamini, who was marking him

Quinn (Hull 1 - 3 Arsenal)
-- Arsenal stop and appeal for a free-kick. Elmohammady plays on and lofts ball into the box
-- Quinn makes a late run in behind Mertesacker, who's ball watching and does not follow the run

So after failing to stop crosses from coming into the penalty area, Arsenal's defenders seem to have issues defending them, either losing the scorer in the box, being caught ball-watching or misjudging the flight of the ball, or just not being able to physically match the goalscorer. On the whole, that's not a great situation to be in as a defending team.

The solution seems relatively simple, too: do more to stop the ball from coming into the area.

This is just headed goals. I'm sure there are more goals we've conceded from crosses.

have to say when we were about to sign Alexis i thought expecting 20 Goals a season [at least for his first] would be very optimistic tbh
well done lad

although one thing i was wondering was number of blocked shots
sometimes he would try to shot at brick wall when the is no way through
just checked and only Charlie Austin[51] had more blocked shots than Alexis[42] in the league this past season

its his his style and guess you have to take risks to make things happen, but thats something that can be worked upon to be more efficient

He's definitely more impulsive than, say, Hazard, choosing to pull the trigger and try a risky pass or go for a shot when he might wait it out as well but when you're wildly talented, you'll pull it off more than enough (See FA Cup final goal)

Would like to see Özil look back at his Bremen days and remember that it's okay to drill it at the top corner every now and again, to take that risk. He's actually a much better finisher than he's let on this season.
