Sion put Gattuso in charge of team

The Italian joined the club in the summer of 2012, and will take command of his team-mates after the board decided to put responsibility into their hands

Sion have announced that former AC Milan star Gennaro Gattuso will be put in charge of team affairs ahead of coach Victor Munoz.

The Swiss side have been on a poor run of form of late, and the club's board have decided to hand extra responsibility to the players in the wake of their 4-0 loss to Thun over the weekend in a bid to reignite their ambition.

"After the disastrous performance of Sion at Thun and in face of the obvious lack of direction of the team, the management of the club has decided to put the players in front of their responsibilities," a club statement read.

"To do this, from today, and until further notice, they will take care of their own affairs. The management is assigning hierarchical responsibility of the group to campaign Gennaro Gattuso.

"Victor Munoz, meanwhile, has taken a step back.

"With this decision and the measures imposed, the club's management hopes to improve the performance of the team rapidly and the investment of the leading figures, who no longer have the ambition of the club."

Gattuso had signed for Sion in the summer of 2012 after leaving San Siro on a free transfer.

The 35-year-old former Milan midfielder was promoted to his new role this week after Victor Munoz was removed from the post.

Gattuso’s debut saw his side earn a 2-0 win in Lausanne, securing their qualification for the Swiss Cup semi-final.

He performed three substitutions from the pitch, including himself four minutes from time.

Gattuso axed as Sion boss

Italian 2006 World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso is no longer the Player Coach of Swiss side FC Sion, the club confirmed on Monday.

Gattuso, who left Milan last summer, was hired in February but he and assistant Arno Rossini have been replaced by Under-21 boss Michael Decastel.

FC Sion lost 5-0 to St Gallen at the weekend, meaning that Gattuso had only picked up 10 points from 11 games in charge.

Gattuso will continue at the club as a player.

Gattuso wasn't directly involved with team-tactics though. He was hired to provide an authoritarian figure in the locker room along with exuding his leadership. So his managerial capabilities aren't tangible just yet.

Especially with Sion's atrocious squad.

Well, Sion played rather abysmally lately. 1 win in the last 6 matches was not exactly convincing.

BTW, for Michel Decastel this is the 3rd stint as Sion's coach. In the last stint he was sacked by Constantin in autumn 2012 after 57 days
