It has always been Maradona and Pele whenever people talk about the best player ever. Have you ever heard of Maradona, Pele and Cyruff? Recently though Messi has somehow made that list.

I have heard cruyff been mention among those 2 it's not as much of a fact as the other 2 but out of all the player that have been mentioned as the 3rd best player of all time, Cruyff is the one I have heard the most.

Beckenbauer should be on that list no doubt, considering all his accomplishments for club and country.

Muller should be on that list too.He was as much important to both Germany and Bayern as Kaiser was.

Comparisons between Cryuff and Messi are completely wrong.Cryuff may not have won the world cup but he never failed to perform in world cups.He was one of the best players in 74 and 78 IIRC.

Not saying Messi will a flop for Argentina in future or something but no one can say Cryuff is not a great because he failed for Netherlands.Because thats completely ridiculous.

Sorry, but if anything you mostly hear it in the order 1. Pele 2. Cruyff 3. Maradona. Pele and Maradona are now mostly compared to Messi, because they are both South-American players and specifically because Maradona is also Argentine. To say that Cruyff was merely "good", not magical is decidedly bizarre. Cruyff as a player and a coach also has had one of the most profound influences over the overall game of any individual (with Pele).

Cruyff was also very successful in bringing a small team (Ajax) to win 2 CLs, he brought the Netherlands to the 1974 World Cup final (absolute key player). And if he and his family hadn't been almost kidnapped in Barcelona during the Junta in Argentina, I am quite sure he wouldn't have been forced into retirement from the NT, and would have helped the Netherlands to DO win the 1978 WC final.

It is hard to quantify who exactly is the best player in the world, impossible even, but by general consensus, Cruyff isn't considered "just great".
