Hey all. I wanted to stop by, not to troll, but to join the discussion on Van Ginkel. I saw him in person last week, and I have to say that I was far from overwhelmed by his contribution. For me, he offered a somewhat reserved presence in midfield. Stuck somewhere between a deep-lying-playmaker and a true defensive midfielder, Van Ginkel offered decent aspects at both, without the mastery of an Alonso or Makelele. The closest thing I would compare him to is Lucas Leiva at the same age.

Of course, I know he's 20 and has a long way to go before he's the finished article. However, I can't say I see the reason for the hype. Van Gikel looks like a midfielder that could grow into a very good footballer. However, I certainly don't think he offers what Chelsea need right at this minute, and I'm frankly pretty surprised that Mourinho is putting so much faith in him. I just think a more typical combination of destroyer/distributor could perform both roles at a far higher level than he can right now. At this stage, I've seen him used alongside both Mikel and Essien, and I have to say that right now he looks far better paired with the more positionally-responsible Essien. That's just personal opinion, though.

So, my question is simple: why the hype? How do you see Van Ginkel fitting in this season and in 4-6 years. Is he going to be Alonso, Busquets, or something different? I'm just curious, as I have yet to be convinced by him, but others seem to rate him quite highly.

I'm sooooooo jealous you guys got him. Hopefully Mou doesn't give him enough game time and he wants to leave within the next 2 years and we'd be there to snatch him

Exactly Don, I saw the Chelsea games and already seen of this guy earlier, Yet to see the hype.

He's not a DM/DLP player, don't compare him to Alonso or Lucas.

He is a B2B player, comparable to Lampard. With better passing.

What I am the most impressed with is his defensive ability because he is not a naturally defensive player. He'll play in the pivot but not as a DM, as a B2B with someone holding the Midfield while he goes on a run.

He isn't what Chelsea fans originially wanted but he is a very solid CM who can improve our midfield as long as he keeps putting in performances like he has.

1 year younger than me and will be a Chelsea starter come the end of the season

We should play this Kid more often. Unfortunately for him, Lampard looks really fit to get more playing time. He can be Chelsea's Alonso or even better.
