Post by DeletedUser#1 Sat Oct 05, 2013 12:38 pm

I'll get blasted by GLamericanacy , but my word he is awful.

Slow, can't win headers, terrible movement, can't shoot....an absolute lunacy of a striker at premier league standards.

Hope he takes his form to US, so US will lose to Mexico's competitors and we won't have Mexico at the world cup.

come on Panama/Guatemala

Di Canio loaded that team with average players, Altidore is not going to stand out when supported by that lot. Not that I rate him anyway, poor mans Anichebe.

I'm American, so I'm biased, but he's really good but an idiot for thinking Sunderland was the right fit for his game.

He needed to go to any team which was the equivalent of a poor man's Arsenal in order to do well. He does better facing the goal than as a target man, though he can do both. He has done well with Sunderland, but has literally received no service...I'm sure he's thinking s#it I'm at Hull all over again.

He's not the player he was at Hull tbh. He may have been scoring for fun in the Eredivisie (who doesn't, these days?), but he's a much sharper player now than he was then.

Put him in a team with stability and where he has good service and he'll do well.

He is quite literally the ONLY attacking outlet for Sunderland at the moment. Quite often, their only relief from opposing pressure is to lump the ball speculatively into the opposing half. To judge Altidore when he's receiving that sort of s**t service is a farce. He's not being asked to be a striker right now. He's being asked to be a pressure release valve.

There was a prime example yesterday against United.  SUnderland had a rare spell of good football in which Altidore and Johnson managed to working it in behind the United defense. Johnson beats a man along the goal line, and had Altidore standing in miles of space just outside of the 6 yard box. However, instead of teeing him up for a shot, Johnson chips it in the general direction of Altidore and a late-arriving Giaccherini. The chip is incredibly awkward for both players and Giaccherini ends up taking it off Altidore toes and putting the shot wide.

I know that I am biased towards Altidore, but I've also watched him play about as much as anyone here. He's not the sort of striker that will do everything and score goals (as he is being asked to do at Sunderland). He needs somewhat decent service. He can play in multiple systems. He can play as a target-man. However, in order to be effective as such, he needs someone willing to combine with. Sunderland are simply playing too deep for him to effectively do that. I personally think he would do very well with a Swansea or a Southampton, where the teams have more possession, more movement in the final third, and more space for him to work within.

Frankly, it makes me sick to see him in such a poor Sunderland side. In hindsight, he should never have left Alkmaar.

the only attacking outlet? where do you leave Sunderland's Star Emmanuele Giaccherini? This dude has participated in like 70% of Sunderland's goals this season........

Dozey Altidore....ITS GOING WIDE WIDE WIDE

Sunderland fans were spazzing out on him on social media networks around the time they were bottom and Paulo Di Canio was imploding on himself.

Quotes from earlier this year:

RedOranje wrote:"I am fairly certain that Jozy Altidore, formerly of Alkmaar Zaanstreek, will be the next Marco van Basten in context to his performances in Sunderland."

McLewis wrote:"I too, agree with you Red. I would compare Jozy more a George Weah than Marco van Basten"

They were right. Altidore has lead Sunderland to Wembley single-handedly.

Some quick facts:

-48 games in the premier league and only 2 goals.

-He's matching Asmir Begović for PL goals this season, although Begović is an excellent player who has been linked with Arsenal and Man Utd in the past. (He's a keeper for those that don't know.)

-A goal every 24 games. As a comparison John Terry averages a goal every 12 games in the league.

He needs Adam Maher so bad right now. Laughing

It's astounding that this guy plays in the premier league. He was so bad at Vila-Real. Can't score to save his life.
