Ribery: I deserved Balon D Or

Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery has slammed the outcome of the 2013 Fifa Ballon d'Or and feels Real Madrid attacker Cristiano Ronaldo did not deserve to win the award as the Portugal international did not collect any trophies last year.

Ribery initially reacted calmly after last week's Fifa gala in Zurich as he had to settle for third spot in the election behind Ronaldo and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, stating that the prestigious individual award was not one of his goals.

However, the Frenchman has now voiced his frustration after all as he believes he should have won the award following his successful 2013 with the Bavarians.

"I won everything I could win with Bayern and individually. Ronaldo on the other hand did not win anything," Ribery told AZ.

"I am not sad that I missed out, but it does hurt a bit. I deserved to win the Ballon d'Or.

"It was clear that Ronaldo would win it. The voting deadline was extended by two weeks. This had never happened before. It wasn't about football. It was a political decision."

Ribery then went on to criticise the FifPro World XI as just three Bayern players made the cut against four Barcelona players.

"There are only three Bayern players in there. That's madness. [Thomas] Muller deserves to be there, and so do [David] Alaba, [Bastian] Schweinsteiger and [Arjen] Robben. We won five titles and made history.

"And then there's the absence of Borussia Dortmund players... Where are [Mario] Gotze and [Robert] Lewandowski? This is impossible."

When he's right he's right. The extension was all about politics, nothing to do with football.

Lewandowski had to compete with Ibra so thats it.

Mario Goetze ahead of who? Ribery,Ronaldo,Messi or Ibra?

Hummels over Ramos and it's not even a discussion.

Also, Lewandowski deserved it more than Messi this past year in terms of being in the XI since Messi has been injured a ton in 2013.  Suarez too.  Either of these 2 players deserved it more... but it's about politics as the BdO showed.

Personally, the most deserving playing imo on Barca is Busquets for 2013...  If he were chosen in the mid, i'd have completely understood.

Lets be honest. Ribery does not do himself any favour by bitching about it.

If he was not happy being Robben's lackey and not being the Top 3 player in CHL Semis, Quarters & Final he would probably have won the B D'or.

FIFPRO is a joke anyway. No Alaba, Robben, Schweni, Javi, Muller, Lewandoski.

Lol. Both Hummels AND Ramos should never be in there. Even Dortmund fans will tell you that Hummels made way too many mistakes in 2013 especially this season. Should've been Boateng.

Messi absolutely deserves the spot in there. Why not? He still scored more than 40 goals, won a championship and made it to the semis in the CL while winning the WCQSA.
I agree that it should've been Schweinsteiger, Alaba and Vidal over Xaviesta and Alves.

Who cares? Bayern won the treble, ACTUAL prestigious trophies. The Balon D'Or is so worthless now.

Winning all the trophies isn't on the criteria for winning the Ballon d'Or. It's the best individual player.

In terms of more Bayern players in the World 11 he's got a point. Schweinsteiger, Martinez, Kroos, Muller and Robben should have been there ahead of Xavi, Iniesta and Ibrahimovic.

You don't need to win anything in order to win ballon dor. This is a team sport, Robert didn't win all those trophies by himself.

Let's say Ribery was on Real Madrid with te same exact team instead of Ronaldo.. Would they have had a better chance of winning the CL and La Liga? I would say no. But this is really pointless to discuss anymore

Surprise. Ribéry who promoted himself more than a Marabella prostitute on christmas eve, is now performing his attempts to play down Ronaldo's Ballon d'Or win, whilst being wistful of his own loss. Quite frankly, it stinks of his sore attitude towards what is a shameless award.

Franck Ribery has criticised the decision to award Cristiano Ronaldo the Ballon d'Or, claiming the Real Madrid attacker did not deserve it.

A report by German newspaper AZ (h/t Stefan Coerts on Goal.com) quotes Ribery saying:

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Franck Ribery were on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or.

Ribery was part of a Bayern Munich team that dominated world and European football in 2013, winning five major trophies. 

Ronaldo, meanwhile, finished the year with no silverware to show as a Real Madrid player, although he did eclipse Ribery when the two are compared individually.

Per BBC Sport, the Portugal international scored 66 goals in 56 appearances over the course of the year and also helped his country qualify for the 2014 World Cup with two match-winning displays against Sweden in the play-offs, including a hat-trick in the second leg.

Ronaldo highlighted his incredible form on his official Twitter account:

Although Ribery was part of the best team in Bayern Munich's history, he was one of many key components in a team unit, rather than the key, which Ronaldo is at Real.

Bayern's greatest strength was their lack of reliance on one particular player. From goalkeeper Manuel Neuer through to attackers Arjen Robben and Thomas Mueller, the side didn't lean on any player, which makes it hard to view Ribery as an outstanding individual.

The France international also takes exception to the extension of the voting deadline, as reported by Ian Ladyman in the Daily Mail, something Ribery believes gave Ronaldo an advantage, as it allowed for the inclusion of his goals against Sweden in the World Cup qualifiers.

However, after completing a clean sweep of trophies with Bayern—and looking a decent bet to retain a handful of them this season under the expert management of Pep Guardiola—maybe Ribery should focus on what he has achieved rather than what he hasn't.

Unlikable he's, he's not wrong though. Cronaldo winning after changing rules after the race feels cheating.

During the year Messi was better individually, and Ribery won everything. So why the hell did Cronaldo win it? Because of the political rule changes and scoring couple 1on1's in a freaking World Cup playoffs, that's why.

It's just scandalous, and Ribery is right to voice his opinion.

He's right about him not winning the Ballon D'Or. Wouldn't agree with the rest though. Schweinsteiger & Lahm are the other two players that should have been mentioned.
