Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
+1 Jay.
We could analyze the weakness of any player in this in-form squad, highlight a time it was exploited and then make a case for their being sold on the back of it. It's senseless imo.
Anyway
Something something James Milner, something something would prefer Arsenal move over Liverpool, something something £130,000 per week wages. - the Metro
If Arteta/Flamini/Diaby/Rosicky leave then he could be a useful addition. No transfer fee would alleviate the impact of those wages and if Walcott goes too then we have another player to fill in on the wings.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
A few days ago Jay (I think? too lazy to check) brought up the Milner-on-a-free thing again, too.
Milner could do a very fine job on either wing or as a deeper midfielder. My only armchair concern would be his wages - but then there's the latest Theo saga, too, and it's got me thinking. If Theo gets shipped off, that could free up convenient space for another high-earning homegrown fella.
It's not a like-for-like replacement, obviously, except inasmuch as both can be listed as 'RW'. We'd trade in Walcott for someone older and without the same pace & end product, but who contributes a lot more defensively and in build-up play, and who is more positionally versatile. It'd be a gamble. But it's one to consider, given that Theo's position isn't secure and Milner's options strike me as limited if he wants high wages and European football.

Milner only makes sense if Arteta, Rosicky and Diaby all leave.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I'd have to say no to Milner even if every single English player we have were to leave. We'd be better of diving into the championship and find somebody younger/making less than half as much as what he is. He really doesn't bring enough to the table to even bother with

No but if Rosicky leaves, you need a player in the similar ilk and i think Milner is that Gnabry and others are different imo

Dude, Rosicky is a God.
Milner is a versatile player and all that, but don't ever make that comparison again.

yeah but if he leaves, you cant find another Rosicky and actually not comparing them, just saying makes sense to have Milner if Rosicky leaves, but again Milner will look for more first team action so he should choose his next club carefully.

The only reason Rosicky will want to leave is because he's not getting enough first team action. Would rather keep him.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I don't see the appeal for Milner. Especially at the wages mentioned, we could get World Cup and CL winner, Sami Khedira for that.
Sign Khedira, he can play DM aswell as CM when Ramsey has his usual run of shit form or is injured. And move Wilshere to DM, that position suits his qualities better and reduces the risk to get McNair'd. Sell Rosicky/Flamini to make space.
Then our midfield would be complete in a 433 or 4231, however Wenger would want it:
*Arteta as the wildcard just in case

Would love to see Rosicky stay one more year, provided he keeps his legs, and get a testimonial before retiring or shipping off to Italy or the Czech Republic or something. Then we can grab Isco or someone like him. He'll either be totally unattainable in a year, or Madrid will have gotten tired of him and thrown him out of the crib with some other expensive toys.

Well said my friend. Rosicky has about 4 Balon D'Ors in an alternate universe where he isn't injury prone.

He isn't injury prone. He had one mega long term injury, after which he only had niggles or whatever here and there. That's pretty usual. His one injury was about 18 months off iirc. When he came back, he was stuck with *bleep* and mental midgets.
If 07-08 hadn't seen the self-destruct, that would have been his crowning moment already. He was immense with Flamini, Hleb and Fabregas that season.
We finished 3rd on 83 points, 4 behind United who won with 87. We lead the league for about two thirds of the season before we self-destructed.
Rosicky isn't a Messi or a Ronaldo type of player to win popularity contests. But he was, and is, the epitome of everything a gentleman and a footballer should be. On and off the pitch. There has not been one game when anyone has said he was not committed.

Just FTR, I never said Mert should be sold..
Jay, agree to disagree... I'm not really looking at one isolated incident though.. I see his lack of pace and sluggishness as a weakness in our defence.. I am not saying we have conceded a load of goals because of him, but we always look penetrable to me and he does expose us a lot at the back. If it wasn't for Kos being a boss, I imagine more goals would have come.
Placing our opinions aside for a moment though.. I imagine we agree that he lacks pace/agility.. and surely the idea is to optimise our squad in every area possible. There are defenders out there who can defend as well as Mert but also don't have a flaw in their game that is so important in modern football.

Re: The Official Summer Transfer Rumours Thread
I think Milner would be a decent addition to the squad. Proper PL player and his workrate could be useful in the latter part of games. I also don't think its too far fetched of an idea to have Milner as a direct squad replacement for Theo considering we have Gnabry coming through the ranks. He might still be raw, but a move like this would give him more of a shot at first team action.
Also don't see the need to replace Mert whatsoever. He is a VERY experienced defender and would be a solid #3. Bringing in another CB is a must because at this point Gabriel and Chambers are unproven to be starting alongside Koscielny. Buying another CB would really kill Chambers playing time though especially with Bellerin our #2 RB and the fact we will surely be buying a DM this summer.
