Johan Cruyff -
"Cristiano will never be the player who can create or take care team that his team plays well. He is just a finisher."
"There is a big difference in being just a great goalscorer and being the best player. Messi deserves Ballon d'Or, no discussion."
"Every person that understand football knows this. It's absolutely ridiculous to me that some people actually think Messi isn't the best."
"This isn't about Cristiano at all. He's a fantastic player, one of the best goalscorers ever. This is about how ridiculously good Messi is."

So in one week without Messi Barcelona lost to Emery, who Messi hasn't lost in 18 games, and Argentina lost WCQ-game in home, which Messi has never lost in 14 games.

Argentina again held scoreless. In three games without Messi Barcelona and Argentina scored 1 goal from penalty.Harmonica wrote:So in one week without Messi Barcelona lost to Emery, who Messi hasn't lost in 18 games, and Argentina lost WCQ-game in home, which Messi has never lost in 14 games.

Re: The Lionel Messi Appreciation Thread & Fan Club II
Messi's injury was good on exposing how bad team Argentina really is, and how much it's has been carried by Messi the past couple years. Team of underachieving "star" players, with clueless coaching and with zero team play or strategy. Just give ball to Messi and expect something to happen, just leave Messi tying opposition midfield and expect couple spacial moments in the game.
Hopefully this will be the catalyst for the changes in the team, physically and mentally. If that happens, I can see Messi leading Argentina WC18 champs, if not, Messi will still carry them close.

Re: The Lionel Messi Appreciation Thread & Fan Club II
If you have the best player in the world in your ranks you must be dependent on him. There's no other way it would work. The entire plan prepared for a game can be trashed if that one player is absent.
Every ball goes through him, he drops deep, he makes the play, he scores, he assists .... even an amateur can look a world beater beside this man.

Cesar Menotti (ARG Coach WC78) - "In the last 20 metres they are similar, Diego's development was a bit different, with more leadership. Messi's development was more correct because of the club he was formed in. Messi gives much more quality, there's no doubt. And Argentina sometimes help him and sometimes not."
Iker Casillas - "Toughest striker I have ever faced? Leo Messi. It has always been Messi. I've played against him many times."

Pele - "Comparisons between me and Messi? Messi is the best player now. He has the same style as Maradona and Zico
Pele - "Who'd be best ever if I wouldn't have existed? There are so many... I'd put Falcão on the same level as Maradona, Cruyff and Messi."

How the genius of Lionel Messi and Dan Carter gave me hope in fighting cancer
Two moments of breathtaking skill made my illness fall away and confirmed that there is no finer vehicle for optimism than sport.
Then came the sharpest ray of light. Barcelona v Bayern Munich at Camp Nou, in May. On the screen in a room short on cheer, Lionel Messi collected a pass on his left foot, turned inside then out in an impossibly narrow channel and sent Jerome Boateng, the Bayern defender, falling sideways like a felled tree. Out came Manuel Neuer, the world’s best goalkeeper, to quash the threat with a giant, raised arm. And Messi chipped him. Chipped one of the biggest and most intimidating men in football.
As the ball bounced into the net Rafinha, another Bayern defender, went with it, his body a tangle of thwarted desperation. The camera panned round the crowd to capture the sense of wonder. A man in an Argentina shirt and Barcelona scarf was having a religious experience. On the commentary, Martin Tyler said: “Only football can make you feel like this.” I felt myself rise from my chair, and illness fell away.
9:35
That moment will not leave my memory, because it made the world feel full of possibilities again. And to think: philosophers have searched for uplifting human truths in the most complex of areas, yet here was a dink from the boot of Lionel Messi casting light across the world.
