Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
I've given up.
It's *bleep* unbelievable. I knew this whole time it was going to happen and yet the stupidity of it hurts just as much.

Yeah, all them PL proven talents we bought for the first team. Can, Sakho, Moreno, Firmino, Coutinho, Markovic, Origi, etc. Horrible strategy.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
1. Ready to pay only low price in foreign market to minimise the risk (except Firmino for the first time in this window)
2. Ready to pay high price for PL proven players, low risk since they are PL proven
tell me how I am wrong then !

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
Why does it matter what they cost? The half of our starting XI outfielders were bought outside of England. It doesn't hurt to supplement them with PL proven players, and in that case, unfortunately, PL players come at a price premium.
Still, it's not like we've been completely cheap in the foreign market either:
Firmino - £29m (most expensive player we've bought under Rodgers)
Markovic - £18m
Balotelli - £14m
Sakho - £13m
Moreno - £13m
Origi - £9m
Can - £9m
Borini - £9m
Aspas - £8m
Coutinho - £7m
Ilori - £6m
Alberto - £6m
Total - £141m
Meanwhile we've spent a total of £83m domestically (not including little transfers under £5m).

Cujo, mate, you can't deny that we have weakness for PL-based players.

I don't see how. Under Rodgers we've spent much more money on foreign players, and signed more of them.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
Yes, we may have spent more money on foreign players because we brought in more foreign players than PL ones, but we haven't paid crazy fees for mediocre or decent players, fees like Carrol's or Lallana's or 20m for a decent right back, or the 40+m we're ready to pay for Benteke, with that money we could easily buy a proven european goal scorer instead of PL garbage.

From someone claiming to be an AV fan who watched him quite often. I'm sure there is some bias involved, but given that he's leaving the club I don't think there's much reason to pump his tires.
Anyway, I'm totally fine with this signing. I think that Benteke is a solid striker, and he has more to his game than people are whining about on here. Will he fit in? Only time will tell, but he's a better option than Balotelli or Lambert, IMO. If he can stay healthy he will definitely score goals in front of Coutinho/Firmino/Lallana/Henderson/Ibe/Markovic or next to Ings/Origi.

I guess now the focus/urgency will be to off-load the remaining dead-woods. Borini, Balotelli, Lambert, Alberto and perhaps Enrique too.

A LOT of gems in the 2014 thread.
This is my fav.

We then try year after a year to hype ourselves up for the new signing, only for them to be average as hell a year later and bitch and moan how poor they are at the end of the season. It's the exact reason why we've only really pushed in a title challenge twice in 20 years. Top teams buy quality, Liverpool try and make quality where there's a dead end.

Lovren at 25 was just one of the very best defenders in the EPL last season.
What's laughable is your crusade against this signing and then spouting on like you didn't watch Liverpool at all this season, let alone Southampton. 'Stats get manipulated to no end' -- you can't manipulate the number of mistakes a player makes, the number of interceptions they had, the number of aerial duels won, etc. Nobody is manipulating any stats they're just posting them to be seen.
There are a few players I would have preferred over Lovren who were probably realistically within reach, but he is not a bad signing.

Rodgers: "Balotelli's future in his own hands."
Translation: "We're desperate to offload him and will accept any bid and then just hope Mario accepts the move."
A pity, we should keep him.

Why on earth SHOULD we keep Balotelli. He's done nothing to warrant being kept. Get him out of here. The sooner the better.

Lets see where we go from here. I was never so optimistic about this season, Rodgers gets it going, well and good. If he fails, welcome Kloppo and I am sure he will make all these signings work for us !!

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
i'm looking forward to the season now. Excited to see how Firmino and Benteke and the rest of the signings do as well Ilori, Origi, and Tex coming back from loan. At the very least we're better than last season on paper.
Really want a trophy. If Brendan fails, like you said, hopefully Klopp is lined up.

He was deployed poorly last season. Got his only consistent run of games early in the season when we were playing a hopeless, wide 4-3-3 with Mario as the lone striker. We were collectively shit.
He is still one of the most naturally gifted players in the squad. Just play him behind the striker or pair him with another striker and he'll do good things. Only I'd feel a lot more hopeful about Balotelli being used correctly if Rodgers wasn't our manager, but oh well.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
I have zero optimism going on to this season. How on earth are we going to deploy Benteke in the team.. I don't have a clue. Playing to his strengths would mean changing our playing style. Firmino is still young, coming in from a different league and a lot will be expected of him given his price tag and I'm so completely skeptical about him being actually productive in his first season. So MUCH deadwood that still needs to be offloaded that it is not even funny. Cluelessness is running through the veins of this club at this moment.
I know I sound extremely pessimistic, but I'm just being realistic.

Re: Summer Transfer Window 2015 - Pt.2
@ art, I can't see Rodgers adopting a system (which he couldn't/wouldn't in the entirety of last season) that optimizes Balotelli this season when he has options like Ings and Origi. And I agree, Balotelli is talented.
@ EE, give them (Ben 'n Brenda) few games. I'm not very elated with Benteke either, but it's worth a try. Also, I think Coutinho will time his through-balls with Firmino's runs and Benteke's presence will actually create some space.
