Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Sales have literally no bearing on how great a rapper is unless you only like them because of their popularity. Eminem is the biggest rapper of all time and nothing will change his early career, as much as he tries to make us forget his classics.
At his peak, nobody rhymed like him. Lyrically, in terms of his imagination and the things he talked about; he was fearless and peerless on the mic.
But some rappers age well and others don't. He's part of the latter even if he still goes platinum when he puts out stuff that pales in comparison to what he used to be able to do. Just the way it goes.

Eminem is top 3 for me.
Hov
Nas
Em
Everybody else.
I wouldn't argue with your top 3 if it had any of those 3 in any order.
Hov proved his greatness once again though by dropping a classic at 47 years old. 13th solo album is a classic. Unheard of.

Whilst he's clearly among the very best, i wouldn't consider Eminem as the absolute goat. Once a certain level of excellence is reached, it becomes a matter of preference, so i respect your opinion.
Top lyricists imo, in no particular order and of course i forget some
Nas, Biggie Smalls, Big L, Eminem, Common, Redman, MF Doom, Guru, Inspectah Deck

The undisputed GOAT for me is 2pac. No one touches him.
Can't decide between 2nd and 3rd.

When gang banging make me kill a nigga blacker than me?"
Such a iconic line from TPAB. Again I love the good kid persona Kendrick has but he kinda went against that in DAMN. imo. Biggest flaw along with the inconsistencys of the songs on it. But every song is a banger so I understand why people like it. I bump DNA in the car alot but I like the conscious authentic side more.
Wait wait... what is this shit?
What happened to yin and yang? Isn't that what Kendrick is all about? Hasn't he fueled his lyrics over his career so far with his inner struggles which always involves contradictions. Having to identify himself in his culture, pointing out the "wrongs" in his culture, but also recognising where these "wrongs" stem from, and that he is a part of it, directly or indirectly.
Kendrick has never been about being this "good kid" which you are portraying. I think you might even misinterpret with what he really meant with "good kid" in that album. He didn't mean pure good, separating himself from the violence, crime, drugs, vices in his culture. All he was trying to do was to say that he is conscious and interogative regarding these stuff, and once you have such a person it always means he has a good, wise, logical thinking head on his body.
And as far as this stupid Eminem vs Kendrick debate is concerned, I'm with Freeza, stop this bullshit. Both are legends, Eminem is still my favourite of all time. His earlier work is timeless and legendary, nobody can *bleep* with that. I admire Kendrick for being the first real rapper since Eminem to have such mainstream success, DAMN just went double platinum if y'all wanna talk numbers. I'm really glad pop culture has become so conscious, and Kendrick is one of the causes of that through the music that he makes, and in turn now he is acclaimed and successful in pop culture.
And I have to say, at the rate that Kendrick is going I think he might overtake Eminem in my personal books soon.
Kendrick is such a smart artist overall.

I just DO NOT get why Biggie is so acclaimed and adored by fans. I like about 2 - 3 Biggie songs, but that's about it. I dislike his flow, his lyrics are average to me. I just never ever get it.
But obviously it probably is just a personal thing and something is wrong with me because as I said, he is so widely held in high regard.

Well he isn't in my top 10 list so it's not just you but it's a matter of preference. Don't think he is overrated because he is probably one of the best story tellers however he isn't amazing. Just very very influential. Many rappers made it due to copying his style.

Re: The Offical Rap Thread Part 3
Depends on what you are looking for as a rap "customer"
- flow
- lyrics
- instrumental
3 main categories in which i divide the quality of a song/album
I rate Biggie as my favourite rapper because, to me he got it all: flow, story telling, lyrical twists, rhymes, fat loungy instrumentals... corresponds exactly to what i appreciate in hip hop. So he gets an A+ in all 3 aspects listed above. Of course, this seems very mechanical but in my mind it is a fluid thought process.
That's why you don't see artists like Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Savage 21 in my top 50 rappers. Not what i'm looking for in terms of flow and instrumentals, so i don't rate them.
But sure, i admit some quality in their repertoire, i jammed a lot recently over that song HUMBLE for example.

For me, I appreciate Biggie so much because I think his flow is insane and Hov, who's the greatest in my eyes, takes some influences from Biggie if we're being honest.
On the other hand, I just do NOT get why 2 Pac is soooooo highly rated. I mean I get that he was talking about shit people could relate to but so where a bunch of other rappers at the time. His flow is actually VERY basic imo. His body of work is also too small to call him the greatest. Obviously, it's not his fault he couldn't rap for longer but it is what it is.
Both Pac and Biggie have too few bodies of work for me to rate either top anything but Biggie's insane flow is what puts him in my personal top 10. I'd listen to Biggie 10 times before listening to Pac.

This is why no talks about who's #1 rapper. Impossible to rate the overall #1 rapper.
It's always the usual top 5
Pac, BIG, Nas, Jay & Em
With 3k in some top 5's

My top 5
Kendrick
Jay Z
Eminem
Andre 3000
Ice Cube
Never been that caught up by Bigger or Pac. Nas would probably be my sixth man on this.

Yeah he most definitely would be there. The rest in top 10 would probably be Kanye, 50 and Chance (I love his style so much and I'm confident the body of work will get there eventually).

Not sure why people rate Chance so much. The guy hardly even rhymes and his flow is quite ordinary. Oh well...

Not sure anyone would count T-Pain as a rapper though.

Dude what? His body of work is insane as of itself, never mind that he died at 26. Has at least 3 albums which are classics, two which are on the argument for greatest album of all time.
2pac's storytelling, lyrics, raw emotion and versatility made him the GOAT. Also his flow was very above just average. The best judge of influence a rapper has are actual rappers themselves and when you see modern day GOATS like Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, J Cole all say they were hugely influenced by 2pac, you know how damn influential he was.

If you don't agree with me that good kid is about the influence of being born in Compton and rising above the violence and drugs to become someone better than the product of his environment then I can't take you seriously.
Only logical reason I've for making XXX is that Kendrick is human. XXX is filled with hyman emotions

meh, I never claimed Kendrick was a pure good kid, I just said it's about rising above it, loving yourself and living rightous which is the same thing.
Anyway for what it's worth I was just being dumb. XXX is totally not promoting violence but rather portraing the evil circle in compton. Third verse speaks for itself
GOAT song. My fav from DAMN.
