It’s not easy but all the big clubs are organised now to have special departments that take care of the transfers. Maybe the managers have a bit less their eye on the transfers than on the game because they have to prepare. I believe that there are people inside the club who take care of the transfers. On the last day of the transfer window it’s always complicated to make a medical. It’s a bit superficial.

As a hypothetical exercise - I'm not predicting or arguing for anything here:

If Wenger stepping down meant we lost Alexis AND Özil, how would you want to see those gaps addressed? I.e., more or less straight replacements in the transfer market (who?), or possibly a rethink of tactics so that we no longer need a #10/Özil player, or something else?

Bellerin - New CM - Xhaka - Whoever - New LWB

Welbeck - Lucas

Get a dynamic CM to help Xhaka out defensively, stick one of Cazorla/Wilshere/Ramsey/Elneny in the other spot, and we'd probably need another forward as well. Monreal can move to LCB when his pace goes, Gibbs can back-up a new LWB like Gaya or Grimaldo.

Welbeck/Lucas would be great in an SS role. Both hard working, mobile and intelligent forwards.

Not really. I was just using his name as a placeholder. Centre back wouldn't necessarily be high on the list of priorities this summer, even if we were to use a back three.

Walcott we could rotate up front. Should be okay playing with a partner.

Ox can cover CM. He could probably cover RWB as well, with a bit of training. Though ideally we'd sign a back-up RWB as well.

To echo Jay (and address my own question), 3-5-2 without Alexis & Özil (or without one of them) is something I thought about too. It wouldn't be the worst way to juggle the squad around even if we lost our two superstars.

I actually feel like that kind of thing could suit Gibbs really well (particularly if he stayed fit, natch), and would potentially enable us to get Ramsey & Wilshere working well at the same time, in central midfield. (Supported by Coq or Xhaka.) At least for some matches.

I reckon Lucas would have proven to be a good signing if he actually had the minutes to prove it Ridiculous how he's been treated since arriving. Contributes whenever he plays but has to sit out every game and doesn't even get off the bench.
