I remember when Pique asked Valverde if he could leave for a tennis tournament during one weekend and Valverde refused but Pique went anyway Laughing

There was zero discipline at the club once Lucho left

Didn't Pique tell off Setien's assistant for making them train hard? rofl

Too much news, don't know what to believe. But it is not difficult to understand that discipline had never been prioritized here in a couple of years. If he can restore, that alone can have some positive impact on our performance.

I get Barça fans and neutrals are letting such changes get them erect here but these are very circumstantial changes as the same excitement was when Pippo came to Milan with some stellar locker room changes but turned out to be a rookie.

Not against Xavi succeeding (I think he will) but similar was put on Arteta's arrival to even Pirlo.

Arteta wasnt even a good midfielder. He was merely decent throughout his playing career. Did he even play for Spain NT? I don't recall

I'm not sure who thought he would be fit for the job. At Man City his tasks were probably limited to carrying Pep's luggage.

Is ARteta even considered an arsenal legend? He couldnt even clean Vieira, Pires or Bergkamp's shoes.

As to Inzaghi or Pirlo, yes it is a hit or miss. But as you see the dire state we're in, hope is our only device left Laughing I would say Pirlo was expected to fail, he never seemed disciplined and focused enoguh to be a coach imo, not a Zidane type guy.

Inzaghi and Porto were not massive failures. The first had an extremely sub-par squad, while the second had a declining project.

Poisoned chalices, like Barça may be at the moment.

I think Xavi will do better than Koeman but with this squad they can't compete with the best. so a top 4 finish in laliga would be a positive result for him this season imo.

i don't think he ever got a Spanish cap, but probably had more to do with coming up in the Spanish golden era generation... iirc there used to be a lot of talk in the English media whether he should play for England because they think he would have been a valuable addition to a tasteless England midfield.

as for his coaching talents... everyone behind the scenes (other coaches, players, authority figures) were praising him as he worked on his coaching medals, and of course Pep can't get enough praising his IQ for the game either. All of which we of course haven't seen in practice yet Laughing

Getting strict on discipline is an outdated management strategy (usually one that bad managers resort to). It may yield some short-term gains, but subordinates won't stay long-term motivated under strict discipline, unless they themselves think it's necessary to have strict discipline in place.

Of the mentioned rules, which strike you as 'strict'? I think it's just the bare minimum

None of these rules are strict. Being on time, not using social media in the dressing room, following your diet and such are very much the bare minimum

I recall Dembele being repeatedly late for training and he faced no consequences

It is really "club de amigos"

Not using social media in the dressing room is fine, but he's demanding they don't use it on the bus, and not even on the day before a game? Like wtf is that, totally disconnected with today's reality. And arriving to training 90 minutes early, wtf, just state when the training starts, when you're required to be there, nobody likes a vague-ass "you should be here 90 minutes before we tell you" bullshit.

Social media the day before a match I agree some boomer tactics by Xavi he won't even be able to enforce

But being there 90 mins before training is super common. The expectation is that they would be in the gym or working on other improvements, even just getting ready so that training starts on time. Not unreasonable at all imo

Bunch of nonsense in this thread Laughing

He's just enforcing rules that were in place during Pep era. Teamwork ,discipline. It won't do miracles, duh, but its essential to building a team as opposed to a cluster of individuals.

Arriving 1,5h before training is normal and he also copied this from Pep, as confirmed by Aguero last month:
-
Kun: "At Man City, we used to arrive at least an hour & a half before training. Here, like half an hour before. I figured, I'm gonna be there an hour before, to see if I can do something in the gym or whatever. But no, even the lights were off."
