Messi to lead Argentina in friendly

Lionel Messi will lead Argentina, who have dropped Carlos Tevez, in a friendly against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium, India on September 2.

The Manchester City forward has also been ignored for another friendly match, against Nigeria, on September 6 in Bangladesh.

Newly-appointed Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella included mostly players plying their trade in European leagues for the games against Venezuela and Nigeria.

Tevez might have been overlooked but his Manchester City teammate Sergio Aguero has found a place in the 26-member side that also has players like Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain (both Real Madrid), Javier Mascherano (Barcelona), Martin Demichelis (Malaga) and Jonas Gutierrez (Newcastle United).

The Squad: Lionel Messi (c), Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Mascherano, Ever Banega, Eduardo Salvio, Martin Demichelis, Federico Fernandez, Ricardo Alvarez, Nicolas Burdisso, Mariano Andujar, Sergio Romero, Ezequiel Garay, Fabian Rinaudo, Nicolas Otamendi, Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta, Jonas Gutierrez, Javier Pastore, Luis Gonzalez, Lisandro Lopez, Cristian Ansaldi, Nicolas Pareja, Red Marcos Jose Sosa, Stephen Andrada

Very good incorporations: Lucho Gonzalez, Li-Lo, Ansaldi, Andrada
Good incorporations: Salvio, F. Fernandez, Alvarez
Bad incorporations: Demichelis, Rinaudo (although I admittedly don't know much about him), Sosa
Good ommisions: Tevez
Bad ommisions: Zanetti, Cambiasso

Am I missing anyone?

Also, Sosa's agent is rumored to be Bilardo's son - which explains his call ups under the past 3 managers.

So glad Tevez is out. Cambiasso is aging but I think he still should get a spot, Zanetti is through, it's time I think he retired from NT football and we start trying out other fullbacks while we can.

Messi as captain?! This is nice. I don't know though, I loved having Maschete as captain too, we'll see.

For those who will claim Messi doesn't have the personality to be a captain look at how he told Mourinho to keep yapping Laughing

Messi is a boss :lol!:

but seriously though, when he took the captains armband vs uruguay he did all he could to lead the team i.e: taking the first penalty and scoring it to lead the way

Idk about the captaincy though. In the past, when we put too much weight on him the team as a whole underperformed (granted this is also due to the tactics, but there have been some instances, both for the NT and to a much lesser extent at Barca, where the pressure causes him to become more individualistic). We'll just have to wait and see how it works out.

Agreed, we'll have to see how Messi does as first captain not vice-captain. I wonder what Masche thinks about it.

The Squad: Lionel Messi (c), Angel Di Maria, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Mascherano, Ever Banega, Eduardo Salvio, Martin Demichelis, Federico Fernandez, Ricardo Alvarez, Nicolas Burdisso, Mariano Andujar, Sergio Romero, Ezequiel Garay, Fabian Rinaudo, Nicolas Otamendi, Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta, Jonas Gutierrez, Javier Pastore, Luis Gonzalez, Lisandro Lopez, Cristian Ansaldi, Nicolas Pareja, Red Marcos Jose Sosa, Stephen Andrada

Lineups guys?

Romero
Zabaleta Garay Otamendi Ansaldi
Mascherano
Banega ---- Lucho
Di Maria ---- Messi ---- Aguero

I'm not too sure about mine, I want to see how Lucho plays with Banega, maybe Pastore over Lucho. As for the forwards, I want to play with Higuain but I want Messi as the striker.

The Indian fans here must be so lucky.

I am assuming Deepak must be attending this match?

I'm assuming Kolkata in the south-east of India right?

Even if you are to far away Deepak, this has to be attended.

LM do you think Sabella will play a 4-3-3? Which system did he use at Estudiantes?

My exact thoughts.

BarrileteCosmico wrote:LM do you think Sabella will play a 4-3-3? Which system did he use at Estudiantes?
Sabella used a 442 at Estudiantes mostly with two wingers 2 strikers and 2 CMs, I think that's what he will be using with Argentina, I hope not though because Argentina have an abundance of attackers and CM/CDMs.

A quick comment on Messi's captaincy. The pros are that seeing players like C.Ronaldo, Eto'o and Ibrahimovic captain their national teams I used to feel that I would like to see Messi do the same. The cons are that the pressure on him is already too much and it might make things even more difficult for him.
