How Did The Netherlands Become #1 in the World?

a simple question.. im slow for not noticing this.. my computer was broke around the time it says it changed which is july 11... how is the netherlands infront of spain!!!

Anyway, maybe it has to do with what "Just Do It" said. Spain's been sleepwalkin'. Plus Netherlands were just behind you guys so I guess it's a bit natural for them to be ahead after you guys slipped up.

FIFA's ranking system takes into account the past 4 years, the supposed strength of the opponents, supposed importance of the match, number of goals scored, and also gives points for being the away team.
As such, even the the Spanish have been more successful, the Dutch have scored more goals in general and done so as the "away" side against supposedly stronger teams. So even though they didn't make the final in Euro '08 the Dutch did beat two of the highest ranking teams at the time by big margins, thus giving them a huge amount of points there. Also, of late their friendlies have been considered to be against "better" opposition so they've earned more.
Note: I am neither agreeing with nor disagreeing with the rankings, just offering an explanation as to the movement.

Whoever holds the WC trophy is #1 and Euro trophy #2.... everybody else are pretenders. Trophies are the only thing that counts. Who cares about rankings.

Yeah I know, but Italy was already doing not-so-good before the WC, whereas Brazil was getting the best results possible until we lost to Holland
I agree with you about the situation though. If people didnt expect so much from our new players, things might be going a little better, without all the pressure.. but Brazil = always pressure.
