i know not many of you care about ice hockey but... the plane of khl team lokomotiv yaroslavl crashed when they were leaving for a game, killing everyone on board - the entire squad, coaches, and plane crew - except two people (a russian player and a flight engineer)

amongst the dead are slovak national team captain pavol demitra, czech world champions jan marek, jozef vasicek and karel rachunek, swedish keeper stefan liv and former nhl defenders ruslan salei and karlis skrastins

I love flying, but being in a plane crash is one of my biggest fears. What a horrible way to go.

I just recently read this on the news and I just couldnt believe it..

I dont know a whole lot about Hockey I watch it from time to time, mostly when National teams play or sometimes NHL..

I do also remember Pavol Demitra. I saw him in the winter olympics 2010 and hes fantastic preformances against Sweden and Canada. Fantastic player and I can only imagine the sorrow the Slovakian people feel losing their captain.

Plane crashes in Russia is becoming way to frequent. I don't know if it's down to outdated planes or poor training, but something needs to be done to prevent such atrocities.

My prayers goes out to them all.

And I agree with the above too, the Russians aviation record is not good. They were in a Yak-42, which has had quite a few crashes since the mid-90's.

I'm reading Alexei Yashin would've been on that plane too, but the Islanders called him and wanted him in NY to work out with them.

A dark day for Hockey indeed and Russia needs to get its act together

a very sad day for the sport of Hockey, I follow and played the sport at a significant level for my entire life, this summer has been terrible for hockey. Lots of lives were lost, and my condolences go out to the family and friends of those who were lost.

It came out after the accident, that the plane had been banned from flying in European Union airspace as the aircraft was deemed unsafe. Hence why the team used this plane to charter the team because it was cheaper...and only flew in Russian Airspace, an accident that could of been easily avoided.
