a lot of it is popular culture, you get rappers and celebs just wearing them as a fashion accessory etc...people see that they wanna look like Jay-Z too

They have great marketing, but they're pretty popular worldwide anyway, especially in Asian countries too, because of players like Hideki Matsui, Chien Ming Wang, etc. They're no longer on the Yankees but that still developed quite a bit of fans in those countries.

It also has to do with what B-Mac said, the NY fitted became a pop-culture item, kids see their favorite entertainers rocking one and then they want one.

I must admit I hissed when I saw Man U ahead of us. But as much as we say biggest club in the world... its true Man U are more popular than us worldwide...

And Yankees arent a suprise. I dont know shit about baseball, but Ive seen their brand a bit around.

Damn the Yankees are first by a pretty large margin.

Good regular season of this year, not so great last year. But the Yankees make a ton of revenue from the YES Network(their own network, Forbes actually has a show on there called Forbes Sports Money)
