Well, he's a 19 year old kid still, just like Mo Dahoud who had a bad game, too. With 6 injured players out, the kids had to play too many games and it showed on Saturday as they looks rather tired. They need to get through the last two matches of this half-series now and then they can recover in the winter break.

DFB-Pokal Last 16 - Tuesday 15 Dec 2015

Borussia M'gladbach vs Werder Bremen

Borussia Mönchengladbach: Sommer - Korb (87. Elvedi), A.Christensen, Nordtveit, Wendt - G.Xhaka, Dahoud (63. Hrgota) - T.Hazard (87. Drmić), F.Johnson - Raffael, Stindl

Spoiler:

Werder Bremen: Wiedwald - Gebre Selassie, Lukimya, Vestergaard, Sternberg - Bargfrede - Fritz (54. Garcia Lopes), Öztunali - Grillitsch (87. Garcia) - Pizarro, Ujah

Goals:
32.) 1:0 - Lars Stindl (assist by Thorgan Hazard)
52.) 1:1 - Janek Sternberg (assist by Claudio Pizarro)
58.) 1:2 - Jannik Vestergaard (assist by Florian Grillitsch)
73.) 2:2 - Branimir Hrgota (assist by Raffael)
75.) 2:3 - Claudio Pizarro (assist by Levin Öztunali)
78.) 2:4 - Anthony Ujah (assist by Florian Grillitsch)
90+3) 3:4 - Branimir Hrgota

FT - Borussia M'gladbach 3:4 Werder Bremen

It showed that Gladbach are on their last breath at the moment. With 6 injuries, all of them in the defense and wings, they had to play the kids much too often for the full matches, and they did show that they were overplayed.

Not exactly a good match for the goalies

Bundesliga Matchday 17 - 20 Dec 2015

Borussia M'gladbach vs SV Darmstadt 98

Borussia M'gladbach: Sommer - Korb, Elvedi, A.Christensen, Wendt - Nordtveit, G.Xhaka - T.Hazard (72. Browers), F.Johnson - Stindl (88. Dahoud), Raffael (89. Drmić)

SV Darmstadt 98: Mathenia - Garics, Sulu, Caldirola, Holland - Niemeyer (55. Vrancic) - Kempe (76. Rausch), Gondorf, Rosenthal (87. Stroh-Engel), Heller - Wagner

Goals:
28.) 0:1 - Marcel Heller (assist by Sandro Wagner)
44.) 1:1 - Lars Stindl
51.) 2:1 - Havard Nordtveit (FK)
67.) 2:2 - Sandro Wagner (assist by Marcel Heller)
86.) 3:2 - Oscar Wendt (assist by Lars Stindl)

FT - Borussia M'gladbach 3:2 SV Darmstadt 98

This was a hard fought match where Gladbach was one man down from minute 39 when the very good young referee Benjamin Brand sent off Granit Xhaka with a direct red for unsporting behaviour.

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Th-xha10
Granit Xhaka managed to get a record 28 yellow cards and 5 red cards within only 95 Bundesliga matches for Gladbach o_O

Amazing result for Gladbach after losing the first 5 matches:

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Bl-hin10

This result is 2 points better than the result after last season's Hinrunde.
Now Gladbach need to nurse their numerous injured players back to health.

Currently out: Álvaro Dominguez (back surgery), Tony Jantschke (partial rupture of the cruciate ligament), Martin Stranzl (fracture of the eye socket), Patrick Herrmann (rupture of the cruciate ligament), Nico Schulz (rupture of the cruciate ligament), and André Hahn (tibial plateau fracture) with longterm injuries, while Ibrahima Traoré isn't fully fit either. That's 4 defenders (no wonder they leak goals) and 3 wingers...

Sorry, I was a bit lazy recently... But the derby win against Köln merits a post for sure ^^

Bundesliga Matchday 22 - 20 Feb 2016

Borussia M'gladbach vs 1.FC Köln

Borussia M'gladbach: Sommer - Elvedi (65. Hofmann), A.Christensen, Nordtveit, Wendt - G.Xhaka, Dahoud (90.+1 Brouwers) - T.Hazard, F.Johnson - Raffael (88. Hrgota), Stindl

1.FC Köln: Horn - Olkowsi, Maroh, Heintz, Mladenovic (62. Hartel) - Lehmann, Hector - Osako (46. Jojic), Gerhardt, Bittencourt (76. Hosiner) - Modeste

Goals:
09.) 1:0 - Mo Dahoud (assist by Raffael)

FT - Borussia M'gladbach 1:0 1.FC Köln

Finally Gladbach kept a clean sheet again! After a good first half, Köln got back stronger after the break, and if it hadn't been for Yann Sommer winning his private duel against Jojic, the goal by Mo Dahoud would likely not have been enough.

But so they managed to shut out Köln, and the shy youngster Mo Dahoud even gave a statement (via Gladbach's press officer, as he doesn't do public interviews) that he is happy for the fans that the team could give them this derby win.

On 7 Mar 2016, the town of Mönchengladbach honoured the best athletes of the year 2015.

Patrick Herrmann (for his debut in the German NT), Julian Korb (as member of the German U21 NT) and the whole football team Borussia M'gladbach (for their 3rd place in the Bundesliga) were among the laureates.

Which reminds me - I totally forgot today's matchday *headdesk*

Hopefully Mainz will draw or lose tomorrow, then Gladbach will stay on the 4th place of the table. Next matchday they will take on Schalke in Gelsenkirchen which will be quite a hard match again, especially as Schalke lost in Berlin yesterday and they will want to show their fans that they are better than that.

Awww! My favourite Swiss goalie was interviewed by former Gladbach player and now Sky moderator Marcell Jansen for a home story where he could show off his other talents than goalkeeping. Fohlen.tv (BMG club TV) made a short clip of the shooting that is freely available: http://www.fohlen.tv/player/list/0/9012091/1

Bundesliga Matchday 27 - 18 Mar 2016

Schalke 04 vs Borussia M'gladbach

Schalke 04: Fährmann  - Riether, J.Matip, Neustädter, Kolasinac - Goretzka, Höjbjerg - Schöpf (61. Aogo), M.Meyer (75. Belhanda), L.Sané (88. M.Friedrich) -  di Santo

Borussia M'gladbach: Sommer - Nordtveit, A.Christensen, Hinteregger - Elvedi, Dahoud (75. P.Herrmann), G.Xhaka, F.Johnson (70. I.Traore) - Stindl - T.Hazard (81. A.Hahn), Raffael

Goals:
59.) 1:0 - Martin Hinteregger (OG)
79.) 1:1 - Andreas Christensen (assist by Lars Stindl)
83.) 2:1 - Leon Goretzka (assist by Leroy Sané)

FT - Schalke 04 2:1 Borussia M'gladbach

My main comment about this match:  Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Dash1

The first "Schalke" goal was utter slapstick when Havard Nordtveit shot the ball against Martin Hinteregger from whom the ball went into the net, and the shot for the second Schalke goal would comfortably have been saved by Yann Sommer, if Granit Xhaka hadn't deflected it into the goal...

For the German speakers - the net reacts to the Hinteregger own goal Laughing
http://www.sport1.de/fussball/bundesliga/2016/03/reaktionen-auf-das-eigentor-von-gladbachs-hinteregger-vs-schalke

As in the last season, Borussia M'gladbach provided the Bundesliga with the own goal of the year again:
Spoiler:
Martin Hinteregger can boast two own goals now in the 9 matches he played for Gladbach so far...

Good question. Sound plausible, but IIRC, they said in the news where they showed the numbers (I later looked up the link) "Gladbach hat am meisten aufs Tor geschossen", which is translated "have shot on goal most", and so I wrote it that way. In hindsight I guess you are right though.

Which doesn't mean that Gladbach shouldn't try and score some more - against Schalke, they had 22 (!!) shots on goal and only scored once in the right net (the other goal was an own goal that lead to the amusing fact that - while Schalke had not a single shot on goal in the 2nd half until said goal - they still were 1:0 up XD)

I admit I was a bit lazy recently, but as only some monstrous mess-up can pry the 4th spot away from Gladbach, I thought I'll add a little

Yay! cheers Gladbach has the chance to qualify for the CL again!

The only drawback is that they will not be seeded for the playoff in the League patch and thus they will likely encount some heavy-weight like one of the Manchester Clubs, AS Roma or SSC Napoli,  or Villarreal or FC Porto. Interesting times!

Then 5 players will be leaving Gladbach after this season: Martin Stranzl (career end), Roel Brouwers (destination unknown), Martin Hinteregger (returns to RB Salzburg), Havard Nordtveit (wants t o join a Premier League club) and Branimir Hrgota (destination unknown).

Well, if we look back at this season, one can only state that it was more than an extraordinary one.

After 5 matchdays, Gladbach stood at 0 points. No team in Bundesliga history managed to even reach the 9th place after starting with 5 straight losses. So if someone would have told them that at the last matchday they'd be on a safe 15th place, everybody probably would have signed this without a second thought.

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Bl-md010

As Lucien Favre sacked himself despite the heavy resistance of the club bosses who tried everything to keep keep him, the former U23 coach André Schubert was promoted interim head coach.

Suddenly the so-called "Schubert effect" managed to rocket Gladbach up the table. 9 weeks after they kept the red lantern and were sad last, they suddenly found themselves in the 4th place:

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Bl-md110

Even though Gladbach didn't actually manage to win their away games most of the time, they were invincible at home and thus they wrote history and ended in the 4th place (while being a bit annoyed that they didn't manage to reach the 3rd place):

Borussia Mönchengladbach - Page 13 Bl-md310

What a roller coaster ride!

Well, Mo Dahoud will very likely be the player to replace Granit Xhaka. Then I heard rumours that Gladbach try to sign Youri Tielemans. But I guess we'll have to wait and see as Max Eberl is usually very secretive with his signings and you often only hear about them after they were finalized. ^^

I think it's time these teams think big tbh?. Why not shed some cash and sign some potential stars and give a shot at Europe. I have seen them play CL last year and by no means they looked out of their depth. Performing outside country will actually give them confidence and they might do better than this in league.

Borussia M'gladbach will never spend big - they only spend the money they have. Moreover - why should they spend big if they actually manage to get the best out of their young players? IMO it is a fallacy that you will get much better value only if you spend more.

The Gladbach director of sports prefers to make shrewd signings of affordable players whose character fits with the team. That way you can be sure that they actually play as a team and thus they will always be better than the sum of their parts.

E.g. who wopuld you prefer to have on your team - David Luiz for 50 mio Euros or Andreas Christensen who is on loan? Some Diego Costa for 38 mio Euros (16 goals / 11 assists in all competitions among them 2/3 in 8 CL matches) or Lars Stindl who cost 3 mio Euros (14 goals / 15 assists in all competitions among them 3/2 in 6 CL matches)?

IMO you should not look so much at the price tag, but rather at how the players fit into the team.
