Sunday's Swiss Super League match: FC Zürich vs FC Basel 1893

FC Zürich: Da Costa; Teixeira, Djimsiti, Glarner, Gavranovic, Koch, Kukeli, Jahovic, Kajevic, Schönbächler, Chiumiento

FC Basel: Sommer; P. Degen, Schär, Dragovic, Steinhöfer; Gilles Yapi; D. Degen, A. Frei, F. Frei, Stocker; Streller

As the Basel players complained that FC Zürich only parked the bus when they met last time, the driver of the FCZ Bus promised they'd do it even better this time:
FC Basel - Page 5 Ptb10

Maybe they should have better tried a snow mobile.

As you can see, Zürich are playing in white and grey camouflage kits to give themselves even more of an advantage over Basel:
FC Basel - Page 5 Fcz10

But not even the snow camouflage helped much...

06.) 0:1 - Fabian Schär (assist Alex Frei)
29.) 0:2 - Alex Frei (assist Philipp Degen) - First goal of Alex Frei after a 643 minute goal drought!

FC Basel - Page 5 Yann-011

*snif* This time the cutest goalie of them all couldn't save the penalty that was awarded to Zürich in the 87th minute (Gavranovic scored).

Alex Frei announced that he will retire from active sport at the end of this season in Summer 2013. He said he wanted to choose the time to retire himself and concentrate more on his family. Right now he wants to finish this season well, possibly win another Swiss league title and then work on obtaining a coaching license. He'd like to coach the youth teams of FC Basel in the future.

Sunday's Swiss Super League match:
FC Basel 1893 vs Grasshopper Club Zürich

FC Basel (4-1-4-1): Sommer; P. Degen, Schär, Dragovic, Steinhöfer; Cabral; D. Degen (70. A. Frei), Yapi (65. Salah), F. Frei, Stocker (81. Diaz); Streller
Bench: Vailati (T), Park, Sauro, Zoua, A. Frei, Diaz, Salah

GC (4-2-3-1): Bürki; Lang, Velotic, Grichting, Pavlovic; Toko, T. Xhaka; Hajrovic (81. Paiva), Gashi (66. Feltscher), Zuber (87. Adili); Ben Khalifa
Bench: Paiva, Feltscher, Taini, Adili, Brahimi, Bauer

Poor Roman Bürki has to show up in this less than fashionable looking kit:
FC Basel - Page 5 Buerki11

Yann Sommer has more luck with his stylish neon blue kit (and he's cuter anyway):
FC Basel - Page 5 Yann12

07.) 1:0 - David Degen (assist Valentin Stocker)
57.) 2:0 - Marco Streller (PK)
72.) 3:0 - Alex Frei (assist Valentin Stocker)
79.) 4:0 - Alex Frei (assist Valentin Stocker)

FT: FC Basel 4:0 Grasshoppers

This match was the last of the referee Wermelinger and unfortunately he is not really leaving with a good performance. He denied GC one penalty and gave two offside goals for Basel (the last two), so the correct result would have been more like 2:0 or 2:1, depending on Yann Sommer's PK killer skills.

EL Group Stage - Match Day 5: FC Basel 1893 vs Sporting CP

FC Basel: Y. Sommer; P. Degen, F. Schär, A. Dragovic, M. Steinhöfer; D. Degen, Cabral, V. Stocker, M. Diaz, Fabian Frei; Alex Frei

Sporting CP: R. Patricio; C. Soares, Xandao, M. Rojo, E. Insua; D. Capel, Gelson Fernandes, Elias, D. Pranjic; Z. Labyad, R. Van Wolfswinkel

23.) 1:0 - Fabian Schär
66.) 2:0 - Valentin Stocker
70.) 3:9 - David Degen

After Cabral was sent of in the 60th minute, 10-men Basel looked doubly dangerous XD

Yann Sommer is beasting again - not only a fantastic save in a 1vs1 with Van Wolfswinkel from point blank range in the first half, his perfectly placed, good 50m long goalkeeper-throw in the 70th minute launched the attack that lead to the third goal. Heart

After Alex Frei and Valentin Stocker were subbed off, Yann Sommer got the captain's armband of Basel for the first time <3

Europe League Group Stage - Matchday 6
KRC Genk–FC Basel 1893

KRC Genk: Köteles; Dani Fernandez, Ngongca, Koulibaly, Hamalainen; Hubert, Hyland; De Ceulaer (58. Masika), Barda (69. Joseph-Monrose), Limbome (88. Schrijvers); Plet.

Ref of the match: Mark Clattenburg

FT - KRC Genk 0:0 FC Basel 1893

In the match, Basel was superior to Genk but very wasteful. Yann Sommer had to make one save, other than that he could have brought a playstation. So no real chance to get a proper screen shot *sulk*

On the plus side, Basel proceeded to the Last 32 of the EL now, albeit they will end up in Pot2 of the unseeded teams.

Well, I hope that Raúl Bobadilla will be a bit tamer at Basel. But the, Murat Yakin was an enfant terrible himself and he has a very good relationship with Bobadilla that reaches many years back, so one can be hopeful.

30 080 spectators watched the test match in the St. Jakob-Park in Basel. As Bayern are only one week away from BL re-start while Basel only started training not quite a week ago, the strengths of both teams were even more skewed than one would expect it normally. Bayern had a very good first half, but in the 2nd half they didn't do much anymore, probably as they have another test match against Unterhaching in München tomorrow.

The Basel players are still working hard in the training camp:

FC Basel - Page 5 Th-yan10

Other than that, they had two more test matches:

Steaua Bukarest 1:1 FC Basel 1893
Ferencvaros Budapest 2:2 FC Basel 1893

(BTW, none of the goals against Basel were scored with Yann Sommer between the sticks - he played only one half in each match and during that time he kept a clean sheet. It was all Mirko Salvi's fault - and the defense, of course :coffee: )

Mohamed Salah had some very good matches, but also some mediocre ones so far. He definitely has some room for improvement still, but he is certainly not the worst player at Basel Smile

Mohamed El Nenny is just a test player still and I haven't seen enough of him to actually form an opinion about him.

FC Basel: Sommer; Philipp Degen, Schär, Dragovic, Park; David Degen (46. Salah), Serey Die (74. Elneny), Cabral, Stocker (84. Zoua), Fabian Frei, Streller.

FC Sion: Vanins; Vanczak (46. Sauthier), Dingsdag, Adailton, Bühler; Fernandes, Gattuso, Basha, Wüthrich (54. Ndjeng); Leo, Lafferty (65. Crettenand).

FC Basel - Page 5 Yann10

45.) Streller 1:0 (assist: Serey Die).
52.) Salah 2:0 (assist: Stocker).
58.) Stocker 3:0 (assist: Streller).

FC Basel - Page 5 Th-gat10

FT - FC Basel 1893 3:0 FC Sion

Basel first had some problems breaking down the highly defensive FC Sion, then Sion tried hard breaking the Basel players. Fortunately Sion weren't successful with either attempt, and so Basel won convincingly. The only drawback was - Yann Sommer got virtually nothing to do and might have caught a cold from idly standing around.

Also hopefully the fans travel safely to St. Petersbourg. A lot of Pool fans got jumped in the metro after the match.

As a matter of fact, I'd have preferred Liverpool for Basel, too. I mean, Dnipropetrovsk in the Last 32, and then far away into Eastern Europe for the Last 16 again? No fun at all! Liverpool would have been way more agreeable for the traveling fans.

Well, I really hope that Basel will manage to get past Zenit as well. They won't be easy at all, but with Basel one never knows. Finally the team starts clicking again after they lost Abraham, Xhaka and Shaqiri, and so one can expect some spirited matches.
