No Julian Draxler?

Does he not play much at Schalke?

Julian Draxler is out injured for probably 4-5 weeks still as he broke his arm when he was fouled in the CL match against Montpellier.

Also out injured are Mario Gómez, Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gündogan and Lars+Sven Bender. Philipp Lahm is suspended for the first of the matches. Joachim Löw will have to be creative with the German defense. He already called up Heiko Westermann as a replacement for Hummels.

According to Bild: Podolski could start as a lone striker against Ireland.

„Ob ich vorne drin, links oder rechts spiele. Wichtig ist, dass man seine Leistung bringt, da wo man eingesetzt wird. Sogar als linker Verteidiger.“

Poldi said that he would play as left-back if Löw asked him to.

Well, Poldi was in today's press conference of the DFB. If you understand German - there were some really funny comments there. ^^

Poldi as a lone striker is actually a good idea in my opinion, with Ozil, Kroos/Muller, and Gotze/Reus behind him.

the left-back position is giving me headache. i don't like schmelzer and well there is nobody else atm. jansen should have a chance if he converts back to a left-back, which he is better at anyway i think

Maybe Löw could try Gonzalo Castro again? Marcel Schmelzer is a liability for Germany, I think he really needs Kevin Großkreutz to actually work.

I shall watch Tony Jantschke atm in the U21 match (he can play both RB and LB after all)...

Bernd Leno

That should have been the Germany U21 0:1 Switzerland U21, but Bernd Leno saved us!

And now it should have been the 1:0 for Germany, if it hadn't been for a likewise fantastic save by Roman Bürki!

Two very talented GKs on show here!

82.) 1:0 - Sebastian Rudy (PK after a foul at Polter)
87.) 1:1 - Josip Drmic

FT - Germany U21 1:1 Switzerland U21

The commentator said it was the first suspension of Lahms career, but it was probably false, since Bela Réthy said it...

Actually I can't remember Philipp Lahm getting many yellow since rather recently, so it well may have been his first suspension.

World Cup 2014 qualifier Germany - Sweden in the Olympiastadion Berlin is coming up. After the U21, the big boys are called to work on getting a starting place inthe next big tournament.

Germany:
Neuer - Boateng, Mertesacker, Badstuber, Lahm - Kroos, Schweinsteiger - T. Müller, Özil, Reus - Klose

Sweden:
Isaksson - Lustig, Granqvist, Olsson, Safari - Wernbloom, Elm - Larsson Ibrahimovic, Holmen, - Elmander

Marcel Schmelzer had to decline playing today as he suffers from a foot injury, thus Jogi Löw decided to start Philipp Lahm on the left side again and Jérôme Boateng on the right.

Olsson is ill and Kallstrom and Svensson are on the bench somehow.

This is the real line-up according to Hamren(coach)

Isaksson-Lustig, Graqvist, Olsson, Safari-Wernbloom, Elm, Larsson, Holmen, Ibra-Elmander

Well, IMO Boa at RB is better than Schmelzer as LB (for the NT, that is). In Dortmund, Marcel Schmelzer is really pretty good as LB, while for Bayern, Jérôme Boateng usually plays as CB nowadays.

wait doesn't Schmelzer play as a RB for Bayer Leverkusen, or am i thinking of someone with a similar name to him. i say that because i have watched them lately and that name rings a bell in my mind.

just realised i read it wrong, Boa is playing LB and Lahm RB no?? now i know what confused me Laughing

It will be hard to get past the two fullback, hopefully Sweden can exploit set pieces and counters Laughing

Nono, Schmelzer got injured, so Lahm shifted to the left, and Boateng plays RB;
Schmelzer has been with Dortmund for ages, for Leverkusen there's Kadlec and Castro as fullbacks.

And Boateng is pretty good, for the NT he's better than Schmelzer, and matches like this one show, he might actually get to be a pretty good fullback with enough practice, though I'm pretty sure he prefers CB.

It's just that he's a decent paster and fast as hell, those are nice attributes to have as a FB, and his tackling is great. His decision making is lacking, though, so he tends to get carded, or get shaken off by his mark.
