Well he was def. trying to win back some fans there by making a quick dash to get the captain's armband when he came on.

Giroud was absolute quality today. His linkup with Walcott was impressive and it was clear they've been working on crosses together.

And what was up with Walcott taking some of our deeper spot kicks? Does he think he's better than Cazorla at set pieces? Laughing

It was the opposite, actually. Arsenal fans sung his name when he came on and chanted "he scores when he wants" later on. The Cologne fans might have boo'd him at one point, but the reception from the Arsenal fans was far from negative.

I would still take him back as would any sensible Gooner but a move within the PL could never be forgiven.

Post by DuringTheWar Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:25 am

Ive just watched the first half now, this is what i think:

Firstly, i cant draw any conclusions on the team performance because koln were playing at walking pace, i guess because their season has already started they didnt want to waste any energy

The most interesting thing to watch has been the new signings. iroud and podolski both looked decent, although nothing special. Cazorla meanwhile was really really good, he adds some gold dust to our passing, i think its the first time in a year i have really enjoyed watching one of our players, like the commentator said its refreshing to watch him play

Its interesting seeing ox in midfield, hes played well but i couldnt help think at times if it was wilshere in midfield playing with cazorla our passing would be brilliant

I am the only 1 who thinks that Kolhn keeper has massive potential??? He's only 19 but put in a great performance, albeit conceding 4

Complete

Podolski oozed confidence and class. He tucked away his penalty calmly, was instrumental in the build up play to his second goal by playing a brilliant chipped pass to Gibbs and then burst through the middle to free himself up and slam in a pass that could have easily been botched by a lesser player. He even assisted Gervinho in the second half with some cheeky one-twos. So two goals and an assist is 'decent' and 'nothing special'.

Yeah, he was fantastic yesterday. He couldn't really do anything about the 1st 3 goals and denied us numerous times before he went off at HT.

However Martinez will hopefully make a good impression this season in the cup competitions and might even become our backup if Fabianski + Vito, so Horn is probably not necessary.

I agree with MJ.

What I saw in Poldi was a very good player. Did a couple of roulettes, made some pretty decent lobbed passes, always wanted to be part of the build up, kept moving around to make it difficult for him to mark and was over all very positive.

I am looking forward to watching him this season, he looks like he could really shut up a couple of mouths and rest to bed those Bayern demons.

Giroud reminded me of a more refined, more built and more technical Chamakh, almost akin to Drogba minus a little physicality and plus technical attributes than that tank.

I love how in the first half we had TV, Mert, Giroud jumping up for corners and actually meeting the ball with their heads, with Carzola and Poldi providing nice corners.

I didnt say he played badly (and i havent even watched the second half), i just didnt think he looked unbelievable or anything. To me, cazorla looked special, compare his performance with podolski and you can see a big difference in quality. When i watch football i call it how i see it, i dont bother trying to put a positive spin on anything, and what i saw from podolski was good but not special, simple as that. Cazorlas passing and moving was far more promising for us than podolski's 2 goals

Podolski didn't really look comfortable as a LW - always had to make a backpass or lose the ball as he couldn't dribble or link-up from there, he has instincts of a striker I don't think he should play there again unless he improves in that respect. His best came when moved centrally here and there.

And before someone brings World Cup 2010, he has changed his game since then basically done a "van Persie".

I thought Giroud and Cazorla were more convincing than Poldi against Köln mostly because they played in their preferred position.
