I'd say money - alliances with clubs are decided pretty arbitrarily anyway. I mean, for some random reason you decide to support a club and then get really invested with your heart in it. But in the end my reasons for being a Madrid fan << 200K a week to be someone else's fan.

Also, it would depend on the quality of the rival. If I'd get to play for Barcelona, well yes, great team. If I'd have to play for Pathetico versus Madrid? Well, I don't know man. Although, tbh, I'd still go for the money.

But indeed, those players who sell out to go to a bigger team if they are already making shitloads of money... That is just strange. In the end, what is the difference between ending your career with 40 million on a bank account or 50 million, right?

If i wouldved had the chance for playing madrid, then i would deffinetly take it no matter the salary. Madrid is club that comes once in a lifetime so I wouldnt pass it up.

An extra 20K matters because it turns out to be close to an extra mil over the course of a year.

It seems silly to expect players to have the same loyalty to a club as a player.

While there are obvious cases of this loyalty in players, Gary Neville, Carragher, Del Piero etc. the majority of players are essentially a commodity for the club.

In an era where most top players started somewhere lower before being scouted by the top teams we can't expect them to have the die hard loyalty of a fan when they have the real chance of being sold or benched by that club.
A club can't stop you being a fan, so a fan's loyalty lasts forever, it can however stop you regularly playing the game you love.

And I'd take the money.

If the difference is 10k/week vs 200k/week then definitely money (0.52mil/year vs 10.4mil/year). Even with one season you could secure your family and their child's future, so sentimental things like "favorite club" shouldn't weight much.

I would never even consider playing for barcelona, even if i played for a 4th division useless korean club

i will play for barcelona but purposely(without making it obvious) play bad for them during important games..

Phrased differently, if someone offered you 10 million to never watch football again, would you take it? Probably.

So then why wouldn't you give up on your loyalty for a similar amount?
