Politics will keep him out of the lineup. They're a much more dangerous attacking threat with Cesc instead of Iniesta.

Can Iniesta play the Xavi role?

Neither Iniesta or Cesc can play the Xavi role this is why its a problem.

Both Cesc and Iniesta are fantastic in the role between Xavi and Messi but they cannot play together without being exposed against a big team.

So who plays the Xavi role? they need someone who dictates the pace of the game whether it be quick or slow and neither Cesc or Iniesta can do this.

Hes improved so much and such a god AM now together being able to play SS or false 9 :bow:

Such a pleasure watching his link up plays and assists at times. Still though he needs to prove that vs the big teams too where last season probably didnt always work, vs small teams though hes magic.

Does anyone have his career assist stats? I bet it is pretty fking amazing.

Still inconsistent as shit and dont get no props untill he is consistent and does more in big games.

Also will go back to midfield when Messi returns and therefore goes back to his invisible self.

Cesc is a very effective player, the best in the world when it comes to final passes and through balls... he has has 12 assists with Barcelona this season (all quality passes).

Stop comparing him to Xavi and Iniesta... all 3 are World Class but with different roles and style of play... He will never be able to control matches like Xavi or dribbler like Iniesta. Also, Iniesta/Xavi will never be as effective as Cesc when it comes to final product (goals & assists).

Bah, Cesc's great pass for Pedro's goal was equalled by Iniesta's pass to Pedro for the Alexis goal.

Assists are terrible stats for this reason. That Alexis tap in assist goes to Pedro when its Iniesta's who pass was the great one, just as great as the Cesc assist pass.

I know, even in games he didnt impact he has looked sharp. He's a really good player.

Just saying, using Iniesta and Xavi as barometers of someone's level isnt really saying anything right now.

Such a GENERIC way of understanding "final product". Goals yes that's one aspect, but assists? pffft, its often in practice an arbitrary stat that suggests one thing and means something else.

I would focus on penetration as the defining characteristic of final product. Is cesc a more penetrative passer than xavi in particular? he is really good, but I think xavi often is capable of more penetrative passes to free teammates into space and behind the defence. It doesn't mean he gets the assist, because he doesn't usually play the last ball, but he puts it all on a plate for the others to finish the job easily. Practically everytime I watch him this season he gets a "pre assist", i'd bet he has the most of them or at least a high amount and its not a coincidence

Tbf xavi had a 30+ assist season once didn't he? I don't remember cesc being that prolific yet
