If you were facing Messi, whether it be from Argentina or Barcelona, and you could pick one defender or defensive midfielder in the world to man mark him, who would you pick?

Well surely with any logic it has to be a midfielder?
If you want to man mark him with a defender, whats going to happen when he drops to the half way line? Your going to have your defender follow him all the way?
Surely not.
It would have to be a mobile midfielder who is smart enough to realise you can win every tackle. More important is making sure he doesnt turn, so simply not loosing him is the job.

Varane, Thiago Silva or Pepe.
Also overall tactics would matter as well. E.g. if you give him space in midfield or a play a highline etc.

Man marking Messi would be tactical suicide but I can't wait for a few more posts until juventus101 comes with the totally unpredictable "I would pick Barzagli or Vidal" answer, which is the only purpose why this thread was created in the first place.

Actually i wouldnt pick Barzagli. I think Chiellini would be better suited. Better acceleration and top speed than Barzagli, and is more physocal, which in Serie A would help in bullying Messi, though in La L ga it would probably end up as a PK. I still wouldnt put it past Barzagli or Vidal for that matter to do a good job, but i think Chiellini would be the best choice. And thats not why i created this thread.

To be fair, Varane has been excellent, but he is being massively overrated. Hes played half a season. He needs to prove himself for a longer period of time before he can even be considered among the best. Thats like me saying Pogba is a Top CM. As of right now its simply too early to make those conclusions, and Pogba has played in more games tuan Varane.

Does Pogba start for Juventus and is he their best midfielder this season? Has he performed in big matches?
Varane is our best defender this season, starts every big game now and has performed in big matches.
Also he's played well whenever he has played since he joined in Summer 2011.

You don't get it.
You put him in your team of the season. ON THE WINGS. You implied that him playing on the wing would be better than other Serie A wide men who have had a good season in favor of putting a CM there.
Who just like Varane, hasn't really been starting from the beginning. They're playing very well when given the chance, but to place them ahead of others just like that?

You are not really going to argue that Varane is a WC player just because he has pulled out some great performances don't you ?

Longevity is a supposed factor that usually determines whether a player is World Class or not. However if longevity wasn't a factor, then Varane would be World Class.
