Fenerbahce: No side scored more goals from set piece situations (excluding penalties) in the Europa League last season than Fenerbahce (7)

Arsenal: Had the best conversion rate in the Champions League last season, scoring 21.3% of their chances@WhoScored

Because it will have an effect on Arsenal's mid-to-long term progress and ability to compete for trophies and CL places, something Liverpool wish to do as well... making us rivals to a degree.

Also because some fans like Arsenal alright (or did prior to this summer) and want to see them succeed when it's not directly hurting Liverpool's own progress. Others feel the opposite and enjoy seeing PL rivals fail even when it doesn't help LFC directly.

With Kuyt and others player we have much liked players previously from LFC playing and would like to see them do well, which Arsenal stand in the way of.

Finally, some are bitter about the way Arsenal have pursued Suarez and a hoping for the chance at a bit of schadenfreude and catharsis which they feel Arsenal missing out on the CL proper would provide.

Champions League play-off - Page 3 Empty Re: Champions League play-off

Arsenal may find themselves with a free pass to the elite stage even if they slip up over two legs as Fenerbahce are currently banned by UEFA.

The Istanbul outfit's former president, Aziz Yildirim, was jailed last September following an investigation into match-fixing allegations after their title win in 2011.

UEFA ruled earlier this summer that officials at the club were complicit in the match-fixing and imposed a European ban which was placed on hold after Fenerbahce appealed to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

But CAS won't announce their verdict on August 28 - the day after the tie's potentially decisive second leg.

If the UEFA verdict is upheld, the Gunners would be reinstated even if they have been knocked out on the field.

Arsenal would then either be placed into the group stage - the draw takes place in Monaco on August 29 - or face ANOTHER play-off against Austrian side Salzburg, who were beaten on aggregate by Fenerbahce in the second knock-out round this week.
If we are forced to play another play-off,our schedule will go haywire.Hope we go direct into the Group stage.

we won't play another playoff.... it's either we play Fern (lose or win go through) or we play Salzburg if Uefa kicks Fern out before our games

But the CAS verdict comes out only on Aug 28th which is after the completion of both the legs of the play-off.So I guess we'll probably go directly to the group stages irrespective of our result in the play-off,if there isn't gonna be a second play-off.

It's kind of a mess. But the turks are being smart i guess... they still get the proceeds from the 2 games against Arsenal and that should be significant for them.

An in-depth analysis of Fenerbahce

MANAGER:

DANGER MEN:

Strengths

The Canaries biggest strength is undoubtedly going forwards, Fenerbahçe have several players capable of creating something out of nothing. Sow makes darting forward and diagonal runs, Webo is a menace from aerial balls, Kuyt – Mr Duracell – never tires and always puts in 100 percent. Then there is the likes of Raul Meireles who has a tendency of scoring wonder goals in big games with his dangerous long-shot, Emre has a passing range capable of causing just about any defence problems. On the bench Fenerbahçe have two of the brightest midfield talents in Turkish football, 19-year-old Salih Ucan and 22-year-old Alper Potuk. With the addition of Emmanuel Emenike who is likely to be available in time for the Arsenal game Fenerbahçe will possess a wide array of attacking options combing explosive speed, technical ability and lethal finishing.

Weaknesses

Fenerbahçe’s main vulnerability is in defense, Yanal will be praying right-back Gökhan Gönül recovers from his injury as his absence will be a huge miss for the Canaries. Gonul did just about everything a manager could hope for in a fullback last season. The Turkish international right-back bombed up and down the pitch contributing to attacking moves and showing bravery in defensive areas. However, the Canaries lack a decent replacement, Mehmet Topuz isn’t a right-back and it showed against Salzburg as the Austrian side exploited his side, Topuz didn’t know when to push up, when to drop back, struggled positionally and against a side like Arsenal boasting the likes of Walcott he would be in for a torrid time. The current defensive line hasn’t had time to gel yet, centre-back Bruno Alves and left-back Michal Kadlec arrived this summer.

Conclusion

The Gunners came out on top over when these two sides last met in the 2008-09 Champions League. Arsenal defeated Fenerbahçe 5-2 in Istanbul before drawing their home fixture 0-0. Wenger will be hoping history repeats itself however, the Canaries are a much stronger side than the one the Premier League side last face and a case can be made for Arsenal not having made any major improvements. Fenerbahçe will have gained confidence from Galatasaray’s victory over Arsenal in the 2013 Emirates Cup and with the 12th man behind them the Canaries could spring an upset next week.

Its clear Fenerbahçe are no push over, we are facing a tough team and there is no room for mistakes. So early in to the season it will be a tricky game.
